Here is the best mining hardware that every miner should have in this days, at least this is what i will choose 🙂
I have selected the best mining hardware such as best gpu for mining that have good mining hashrate and at the same time low watt consumption. This can be achieved only by modding the bios, changing the timings like 1500MHz clock speed is used at 1625, 1750 and 2000MHz and will result in higher transfer speed of data from and to the GPU. Check this tutorial for more details, that’s a great example, note that this is available for AMD RX GPU cards.. Nvidia GPUs run on stock BIOS!
I have also tried to select based on quality, performance and price the best motherboard for mining, best psu for mining, cpu, memory ram, ssd, usb risers, frame and few more useful stuff.
This is the best mining hardware configuration that can be used for a mining rig setup to mine the following coins / altcoins: Ethereum (ETH), Ethereum Classic (ETC), Monero (XMR), Ravencoin (RVN), Bitcoin Gold (BTG), Zclassic (ZCL), Nexus (NXS), Luxcoin (LUX), Purk, PascalCoin (PASC), Decred (DCR), Expanse (EXP), Lbry Credits (LBC), Siacoin (SC), Komodo (KMD), Ubiq (UBQ), Karbowanec (KRB), Bipcoin (BIP), Orbitco (ORB), Zencash (ZEN), Hush (HUSH). Algorithms like Ethash, Equihash, CryptoNight, CrypoNightV7, CryptoNight Heavy, Lyra2RECv2, NeoScrypt, Blake (14r), Pascal etc..
Let’s begin 🙂

AMD RX Vega 56 / 64
Since with the new RX Vega 56 / 64 released things have changed a bit, everyone want to make a rig with those, those became fast one of the best gpu for mining Monero (CryptoNight, CryptoNightV7). RX Vegas costs twice than RX 580/570 but also the tripled hashrate makes the difference and pays for the price.

The costs
Total costs (on amazon) is around $3,000 – $4,000, depending on what GPUs, for instante a GTX 1080 Ti Mining Rig can cost up to $9,000. The best price that you can get for a full rig is around $3,500 with RX 580 8GB , if you are going to build the frame then the costs will reduce a bit. If you are from USA/CA, then you are lucky, i think there are the best sales and prices.
Costs updated on April, 30 2018 for one mining rig with 6x Sapphire Nitro+ RX 580 8GB GPUs!
- US/CA: $3,500 (1151)
- EU: $3,300 (1151)

How will the shift to PoW effect mining rig viability?
Also, 2GB cards are toast for Ethereum. 4GB may not last as long as 2GB did.
Hey Hannibal, you talk about the Ethereum PoS ? Well once the switch there are more
altcoins that are waiting to be mined like monero, zcash, zclassic,
ubiq, decred etc..
Yeah, I meant PoS. Isn’t the trend to move away from mining and PoW for cryptocurrencies in general? And is there gonna be any point in mining tertiary coins that don’t offer anything innovative or new from each other?
PascalCoin (PASC), Decred (DCR), Expanse (EXP), Lbry Credits (LBC), Siacoin (SC), Komodo (KMD), Ubiq (UBQ), Karbowanec (KRB), Bipcoin (BIP), Orbitco (ORB), Zencash (ZEN), Hush (HUSH) etc..
the best motherboard, psu, cpu, memory ram, ssd, usb risers, frame and few more useful stuff.
i’ve done some considerations…
why don’t use more recent and same cost mobo and cpu…
https://it.msi.com/Motherboard/Z170-A-PRO.html#hero-overview
for example. 6 pci-e slots and more recent at same cost.
what do you think?
Its because i am recommending what is 100% good, efficient and tested by many miners. If you want you can give it a try and let me know 🙂
Thank you for this amazing guide! I was hoping to use my mining rig as a spare gaming rig as well for company. Would it be possible to slap an i7 CPU and some more ram in there and call it a day?
Supports New 4th and 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7/i5/i3/Xeon®/Pentium®/Celeron® Processors (Socket 1150)
yes you can 😀
Awesome! Thanks!!
Hi, the motherboard is out of stock, can u recommend me another one??? thanks in advance.
Hi,
check one of these:
http://amzn.to/2mGwMFT
http://amzn.to/2nTGfKY
http://amzn.to/2mGBbs5
Hi, what do you think about “Fatal1ty Z97X”?
that should also be good, another one is Asrock Z97 Extreme4
Thanks for the great guide!
I have couple questions about GPU though 🙂
Why 470 and not 480?
Does it make sense to go 8GB instead 4GB?
Is Sapphire better than say Asus or XFX?
Finally 🙂 Is Nitro+ better than just Nitro?
Thanks!
Also curious why not go for the 480 here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01J1M4IHS/ref=ox_sc_act_title_6?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
With the rebate it’s almost identical price but more performance?
I am about to update the guide, with second options for GPUs and PSUs, which will increase the price per rig.
hooooo, waiting the update to make my purchase!!! thanks!!!!
Awesome! You are the hero us noob miners need
Can you suggest some more mining hardware comparisation sites , cause it is hard to me find hash rate for the GPU , I found a lot of sites but they are not much accurate I think for example http://www.mininghwcomparison.com/list/index.php?brand=both Should I use for GPU Rx 480 Nitro+ or Rx 470 Nitro+ ? Can I achieve above mentioned result with Rx 480 Nitro+?
Hi @disqus_yGnCb3Tr2x:disqus modifying the BIOS and overcloking a 470 4gb, yes, you can achive the same hasrate as 480 8gb on ethereum, anyway you 480 you will have a better hasrate on dual and also on ethereum because it has much more memory..
Thank you , good blog on the internet right now 🙂
hi! very good job to synthetising!!!!! do you have a comparison between Sapphire Radeon NITRO+ Rx 480 8GB GDDR5 OC w/ backplate and xfx rx480 gtr black edition? i ask you that because i think xfx are the best cards…less hotter, more speed, less noise………can you comfirm me that please :)????
Hey @davidboure:disqus, i did not had the chance to test them, looks like this model also have the vbios switch.. is that correct ? What are your results with this card?
si vous avez d’autres choix pour les alim a qualité egale?,…..car la evga 1300 est plutot chere et dure a trouver……
sinon a la boutique du mineur
total 04/04/2017 environ 530 euros sans les gpu:
– alim:189 dollars
– carte maman:92 euros
– processeur: 85 euros
– ssd:56 euros
– ram: 62 dollars
– raizers: 44 euros
the psu corsair hx1200i is good?
Yes, it is very good!
is there still an update coming up? Interested in getting a mining rig soon and want the best info because i am a noob and could do the research…. but this seems pretty nice and updated so i’ll stick with it. Also, if I don’t have to pay electricity are there any parts that would be good to uprgade?
Working on it right now, adding more alternatives for gpu’s, motherboards, cpu’s etc.. and few more useful things 🙂
Dear Ciprian, thank you for your posts.
I’ve actually this rig but changing GPU and CPU but when i’m installing, this problem come:
https://gyazo.com/c3ec20dc4454cf4aa22a552cc15ebc8c
Now, I’ve connect it but nothing happens, and still have the same problem:
https://gyazo.com/706a298f76c764640fa95409b2d803b0
Do u have a idea what can be happening?
Thank for your time!
Hi, basically this mobo has only one molex where to plug.. have you tried with a different molex? maybe is something wrong with that.. make sure the pins are ok! From this view looks like there is a lot of space between the molex and connector, maybe push it a little more? let me know..
Also if you have powered risers there is no need to power up the mobo.. hmm
Finally there’s nothing. I mean, I just had to install everything and then it works… hahaha my fault, thank for your time!
To everyone following this post, it will be updated today with lots of other options or alternatives! Also i have included few more things that every rig must have! Stay close!
Hello, Wich one is better Rx 470 4GB or 8G?
both, depends on the price you can get! if the price is close the go with 8gb
nice update. Ciprian you are number one!!
If the GPUs only use 80w, even if I had 7 of them they would only use 560w. Why do I need 2 power supplies?
That is based on GPU-z, but everyone knows that it is showing the info a bit different, actually the power per card is somewhere 100w-130w depends on what you mine.
For example 6x RX 480 8GB rig on dual minining ETH+DCR using claymore v9.0 the total power consumption is 1040w.
Another example with 5x rx 470 4gb is 850w
If the rigs were not dual, the consumption it will be 700w-750w
Anyways, is always good PSU with extra power!
Ok, thanks for the info.
Also, would you recommend dual mining? I know I want to mine ETH, but if I can increase profitability on the rig that would be great. If so, what would be best to dual mine with ETH?
Yes, i do recommend dual mining, there is about $100 more profit monthly, if you don’t want to keep decred it can be exchanged and use the money to pay the electricity bill 🙂 So basically you will never pay with money pocket! ba dum tss
That is really helpful. Do you have a tutorial for that?
https://1stminingrig.com/claymores-dual-ethereum-miner-v9-0-better-mining-performance/
Nice post ….Thank you guys,…
Can i put 2 diferents gpu’s running in the same rig?
Exem: one 470 and other 480
Yep, should work with no problem!
What is the best option? 4 different models and prices in newegg:
https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/2827dbb4a288c5153adeb52b1a474c535f7a5518bf7bcd9db384a3ab71174d81.jpg
@disqus_9kfxsMXg2s:disqus, i always intend to buy Nitro+ & OC !
What power source do you recommend?
Any of those recommended above, if you have 7 GPUs then go with 2x 750w!
Hey man whats the best set up if i have free electricity x6 rx 470, 480? or may 380 or 390? whats the best cost-effective with free electricity?
Id still go with 480s or 470s, wait a bit more for more tests regarding the new 570s and 580s, as i read till now those cards drain more power, maybe there is a reason for that but until today no improvements (yet)..
If accounting only the performances, how about 3GB 1060’s instead? they score well in various coins, not bad for eth and are cheap. i want to build a 2x5cards mine. or maybe 5×470 and 5×1060..
3GB 1060 and 4gb 470 are ok for mining? MEmory space don’t seems much used, because the 6GB abd 8GB version cost more :/
Does CPU and Mainboard selection affect speed? 😀
can I use 2 PSU EVGA 750w? because EVGA 1300w does not exist in my country 😛
No, it wont affect the speed! 🙂 Yes, you can use dual PSU liek EVGA 750w are really good! I have seen people using it with no issue, nayway be careful with it, make sure you power it with 1 molex cable that cable should not have anything else attached and maybe you can use it with up to 2 GPUs..
Thanks you for the great guide :*
Thank you for your great tutorials, it is indeed number 1 in the mining field so far. I hope that you give us your opinion considering the new series RX5xx and finally i need your advice considering the available GPUs on the market , what can be a replacement for the sapphire nitro+ RX480 8G ? to give the same hash rate after being overclocked ? and do you recommend buying MSI GPUs or Asus ?
Hey @yusufshaaban:disqus, i am happy that my tutorials are helpful! I am actually working on a nice article about the new 500 series, it should be ready very soon! As an alternative you can try MSI RX 480 8GB Gaming X, those are also very good and can reach 30mh/s, i will add them on this list later today, i was about to do it earlier but i was busy with the 500 series one:) Also MSI RX 470 4GB Gaming X are very good!
Thanks for your time and effort. So, regardless of the model of the GPU , it can have a modified Bios to increase it’s hash rate ? i mean that it would not differ if it was RX 470 4G or 8G ? Msi or Sapphire ? Because i am in the middle of a process of buying 9 MSI cards RX 470 8G , and i had to be sure that it can have a modified bios because it’s stock hashrate ( as you know) is only 22.xx MH/s, and that is a small number compared to the sapphire nitro+.
Thanks again for your precise and great work you have done on your site and KEEP IT UP
rx 470 4gb sapphire or msi will have 22.xx mh on stock, with modified bios will have 24-25 mhs and overclocked 29-29.7mh/s (this is what i get)
rx 480 8gb sapphire or msi will have 24.xx on stock, with modified bios will have 26-27 and overclocked 29-30 mh/s
This also applies to 470 8gb or 480 4gb! At least for ethereum / ethash!
Note that all this depends of what memory your cards will have!
Thanks a lot for the great tuturial! Can you tell me if 4GB ram per rig (6 GPUs each) is enough or better go for more? Thanks in advance.
Hi, yes 4gb are enough for one rig!
I am using this (http://www.adata.com/en/specification/75) psu, can you suggest me how many sapphire rx 480 8gb nitro+ oc (modified rom) i can connect with this?
Yes, it should be enough.. i use a corsair 1200w and is good!
If you have cheap electricity then go with R9 290. base clock 947 mhz gives you 26.5 MH/s and if you have OC edition like Power Colour PCS it gives you 29.4 MH/s i have checked it my self on 25 of April 2017.
Ciprian V is there any chance I can PM or skype or something like that? I would like to ask a few questions if possible and thanks again for this amazing tutorial!
Hi @novanwebster:disqus , please use the contact page here: https://1stminingrig.com/contact/ , send me your skype username. Thank you!
@ciprian u never reply to my question, I’m still waiting.
Thank You
What is your power consumption for single RX480 GPU? Do you think Corsair 1200W will be enough for 6x build?
Hi @ssbb_me:disqus, (on dual) non undevrvolted is around 1100w, undervolted 950w, mining ethereum only the consumption will be much lower around 850w with undervolt.
Looks great for me, thanks!
This is 100 dollars cheaper but is only 4GB. What hash rate will I be able to get?
https://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Radeon-backplate-Graphics-11260-13-20G/dp/B01NAEFAHC/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1493242536&sr=1-1&keywords=Sapphire+NITRO%2B+Rx
Yes is good but note that there is no bios switch.
So I would not be able to mod?
Yes it is, but i only recommend the ones with bios switch for beginners.. if something goes wrong while the bios is programmed then is very easy to get the card back up..
Hi. Do you need to change some settings in Bios before running 6 or 7gpu? Thank you!
Not really, but maybe depends on motherboard..
Awesome, Amazing. Can’t wait to finish my first rig and send a 6-pack your way. 🙂
Quick question in regards to Memory for MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon Motherboard LGA 1151 MOBO, which one is it?
Kingston HyperX FURY Black 4GB 2133MHz DDR4 CL14 DIMM – Blue – 1151 Socket
or
Kingston HyperX Fury 4GB 1333MHz
Thanks in advance …and you are amazing!!!
Hi @SonnyKaran:disqus, the one you should get is the Kingston HyperX FURY Black 4GB 2133MHz DDR4 CL14 DIMM – Blue – 1151 Socket
Thank you. You Rock!!!
Yeah Interesting guide i also made my own rig with some cheap stuffs from this unknown person its working just awesome.
You don’t say Sherlock ? 🙂 stop spamming dude.. please!
Any recommendations on using M.2 SSD drives over normal SSD? Boot might be faster but not a huge benefit as any rig setup wont be rebooted that often. Has anyone tested one that could report back on power usage or speed improvements?
Hi @graycatgrahat:disqus, it will not increase mining performance.. just a faster boot 🙂
One more question, in regards to motherboard BIOS settings and usage. Have you found any manufacturer’s BIOS to have any major advantages or a preferred BIOS?
Nope, did not had any major problems with all the boards i used..
Hi
1.)did u know hashrate from rx 480 8gb red devil and watt consume with 6 of them ?
2.)when i run 6 time rx 480 is the 1200 watt psu enough? (dualmode)
Hi, i did not really tested the red devils, but yes 1200w psu is enoug, with not undervolt it will consume 1100 or something
ty 4 answer i dont make any risk and buy nitro oc, but there so expensive 316 $ oO
Can u tell me about the “Time Bomb” in eth mining ? or can u tell me what can also mine else like eth after eth switch to pos =?
atm i mine dual eth and pasc is there an other option 4 dualmining like
**** and pasc?
You can choose to mine ETC.. or any other coin that is profitable..
Hi, where can i buy the
Sapphire Radeon NITRO+ RX 480 8GB OC??? i buy 2 from amazon (max allowed per 1 person) where can i find the others 4???? online shop please, help me, thanks.
Have you tried on local shops or other online shops ?
with all the options. What would be the ultimate mix and match set up? Don’t think price, electricity or anything else… just pretend you have 10,000$ to make a rig. Pls advise
Hi, hmm i will go with 470 4gb nitro+ oc 🙂 but if there is not a big price difference then i will go with 480 8gbs!
I am so out my league here. Can you pm me ?
cannot pm you here 😀 contact me on contact page 🙂
Over the weekend I spoke to a friend who can help me with set up. I also read your tutorial so it answered most of my questions. With the 480 gbs set up how much ETH would you be able to mine per day?? Thanks for all your help!_!
the max gpu one psu can support is 6 ? even if we undervolt to 80watt each gpu ? also, i have the follow psu https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/OCZ/FTY550W/ think it might support 2 rx470 on 80w, according to gpuz ?
If you mine Ethereum only yes, it can hold two gpu, maybe on dual too but well undervolted and underclocked..
how much you think it can support if undervolted something between 80w and at 29mh ? can go ahead at 4 gpus maybe ? sorry for the questions.
Hello
I just bought the B250 F Asus Motherboard and Connected 6x RX480 to the Motherboard to Mine Ethereum, and will soon be investing 120,000 USD more into 64 Rigs which will be working out of a cold storage warehouse. The Problem I am getting is the B250F recognizes the 6 GPUs but….. It is showing Code 12 in 4 of them and only 2 are at working Capacity. Code 12 is insufficient resources.
If you would be able to suggest any alternatives for the above motherboard . Should I change the motherboard if so which one cause most of the motherboards I requested were out of stock which leaves me with the x99 chipset which will ruin my ROI.
Ciprian I will pay you to consult me. 50 dollars an hour on skype or fb messenger. Pls add me fb id email : [email protected]
switch the PCI-E to Gen 2.0 or Gen 1.0 and dram to 3.5 GB?
i also read about that this mainboard have an new bios update
Hi can we talk on fb messenger? I have switched the pci e to gen 1.0 from auto. And dont see any option for dram.
Did you update Your BIOS from mobo? Y we can Talk Over fb msg But my english are not so Good its not my Mother language
Hey Add me here fb id email – [email protected]
Don’t worry man English is not my mother tongue too xD
Also read my answer to ciprian and tell me what you think about it !
Hi, i prefer the ASRock H81 PRO BTC R2.0 LGA 1150. I dont have any issues connecting the rx 480 to the mobo. I just ordered 2 more of them.
Cheers
Hi Thanks for replying Please read my reply to ciprian and tell me what you think of it.
Hi,
Here is what i found:
1. First try to update motherboard BIOS to latest version
2. Change PCI-e speed to GEN1
3. check this image: https://us.v-cdn.net/5021640/uploads/editor/as/nnkk3ad1fh6p.jpg
(Also check user manual maybe the motherboard doesn’t allow all PCI lanes to be used at the same time)
I would highly recommend ASRock H81 PRO BTC R2.0, it is a plug and play board, made for this type of activity :), you wont waste time debugging etc..
Let me know what you got!
Hey Ciprian
First of all Thank you for replying. I have got 4 of the GPUs at working capacity. The way I did it ? Well Clean installed Win 10, Plugged in the first card, then shut it down and plugged in the second card and repeated this 4 times. However the fifth time, the computer refuses to start. The screen stays blank so I switched off the PSU directly and restarted the system, it booted up but the 4 Cards were showing Error Code 12 : Insufficient Resources, and only one was at working capacity. I have tried changing the PCIe Modes from Gen 1.0 to 2.0 and Auto. The motherboard just won’t take those extra 2 cards. BIOS is already latest version.
Also I know about the Asrock H81 PRO BTC R2.0, it is not available in India anywhere currently. I have a supplier who agreed to supply me 35 Boards by the end of May but at a price of $240 USD per Board or approximately 15,500 INR.
I am taking delivery of 100 Sapphire Nitro Plus RX580 Cards and 100 Sapphire Pulse RX580 Graphic Cards day after tomorrow. Is it a wise decision? or should I stick with RX480? Cause the supplier says he has tested the RX580 and gives out 29-31 MH/s out of the box!
Also pls can we talk on fb messenger? This project is driving me mad… I got 120000 USD in hand and getting stuck at trivial steps.
fb email ID : [email protected]
Much easier to talk on facebook, i already sent you a message few hours a go, haven’t received it ?
Hey man ! You really seem to know your stuff, can we talk on Facebook? I could really use your Help!!
Sure, send your details via contact page or contact me on facebook page directly 🙂

Be careful ETH is going PoS at the end of this year!
Do you have a tutorial on how to put this together?
Check here: https://1stminingrig.com/tutorial-ethereum-mining-rig-part-3-building-the-rig/
Can i please ask the Sapphire NITRO+ RX 470 OC they ar aout off stock in UK most.
If i buy this one
XFX
Radeon RX 470 RS Black Edition 4096MB
i can moded bios all tourial like u ? or must be Sapphire mark ? At discription xfx show 110 W power cons…
You cannot use the same bios, what you can do is to copy the differences and save the bios then flash it.
Hi @ciprianpt:disqus Thanks for telling your experience. I wonder that how much do you earn(approx.) daily in Ethereum?
!Just for Information!
I just tried the ASUS STRIX RX 480 O8G GAMING (8GB, High End). out the box i have 25mh *Edit: ETH*. I will edit the post when i found a good bios mod. Thx and happy mining
thank you! waiting for next report 😉
Can you fb msg me I have some questions ! [email protected]
Thank you
I think is much easier of you send me a message on facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/1stminingrig/
Hey, your blog is very helpfull, thanks for your service 🙂
One question: have you heard around about some Z270 mobo compatible? Just to get the latest chipset and get a long life 🙂
Hi, could you please clarify about PSUs? You noted that power consumption is about 70-80w per GPU which results in 490-560w for 7xGPUs rig (plus ~200w for MB & CPU I believe). Why do we need 2x750w PSUs?
Hi, 70-80w is what GPU-z that means around 100-120w
Here is my power consumption for system only, ehereum only and dual for rx nitro+ 470 4gb oc modded bios, downclocked and undervolted
140w default
240w Ethereum only
263w Ethereum + Decred
Let’s say i have 130w per GPU, for 5 GPUs on this system the power consumption is 840w if ill add a new GPU then ill have around 950w – 970w.
This is all about how good the cards are undervolted and downcloked..
Also the new 500 series consume much power so i guess will be needed a 1300w psu for sure.
MSI 170A gaming pro has 7 pcie slots, does that mean you can run 7 cards on it ?
Just bought rx 580 asus oc and msi. Where should I submit the report
here please: https://1stminingrig.com/are-the-rx570-and-rx580-profitable-mining-performance-review/
thanks!
Is it worth while to just wait for the 470s to get back in stock in the US or is there another card(of similar price range) that I can get?
Hi, i don’t think the 400s will be in stoc anymore, those are no longer produced because the 500 seriers are out. But if you find them, go buy them asap.. also nitro+ rx 470 8gb oc are good
I have the 470s 4gb on back order and are supposed to ship by June. The 470s 8gb are also out of stock. So I guess waiting is the name of the game
Yeah.. how many were you able to get?
6 !
The only thing you missed is the OS. Win 10 isnt free. But otherwise I’m following this and making my own rig based on this one. I would personally suggest spending a bit more on a single PSU. But that is just me.
Yep, i also prefer single PSU, EVGA 1300w is the best choice..
How did you power the risers? I’m thinking about getting risers that have a 6 pin slot on them on them and powering them directly into the 8 pin in my PSU. I can power two risers this way as the cords that come with my PSU have two 6 pin split on them. Do you think that would work?
If you have enough pcie cables then yes, with one cable you can power one gpu and one riser. evga 1300w has enough cables for that..
Right on! I think I will power two risers with one 8 pin, and power each GPU separately. I have 9 8 pin slots on my PSU
Hi Ciprian, I’m also prefer single PSU. It’s easily.
Is Corsair HX1200i 1200w also enough for 6 RX580?
It should be but the evga has enough pcie cables for all 6 gpus
Hi. Have you tried any 1 to 3 pcie splitters ? I’ve seen some people on forums talk about using them. They’re like 25 bucks on amazon. Basically you stick this pcie 1x connector on a 4x or 16x pcie slot and then the cable has board with 3 pcie 1x slots. This 1 to 3 splitter tales 1x for itself so it turns 4x slot into 3X 1x pcie slots. Effectively if you’re using a motherboard with only 3/4/5 pcie slots into 7 or 8 slots.
https://forum.ethereum.org/discussion/5195/riser-1-to-3-pci-e-1x
https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Adapters/Mini-PCIe-express-slots-Riser-external-Multiplier/B01L74AKBQ
Maybe even turn 3 4/16x slots slots into 9 slots plus a couple of 1x on board itself. A top cpu has 16 pcie lanes (20-4 reserved so 16 effective) and motherboard chipset 8 plus.
Sapphire Radeon NITRO+ Rx 470 has many bad reviews on amazon. what is the reason?
Not sure why.. depends what for 🙂 for mining is excellent..
hey dude i love your blog . just one question i have a 1600w bitmain psu that i dont use any more so i want to know if there any problem for use it on a 7x 470 gpu im from venezuela sorry the terrible english
Hi, basically it should not be any problem with that.. do you have all the cables for motherboard ? or you want to just power the gpus ?
Hello,
Please suggest me another psu model (other than EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 80+ GOLD 750W Power Supply) for 7gpu mining.
I just posted something that may help you. Most professionally built rigs have HP server power supplies instead of gaming computer ones. Then you use a cheap 400w computer power supply to run your mobo and risers. I bought a 450w PS yesterday for 20 bucks on sale at newegg 🙂
ok, could you please suggest me one? I have gaming motherboard. How can I used it?
Amazon has the Sapphire 11266-14-20G Radeon NITRO+ RX 570 4GB GDDR5 DUAL HDMI / DVI-D / DUAL DP card in stock on the 20th which 3 weeks earlier than the 470 for $210 should I go with these or are the 470s still better?
I sill prefer 470s 🙂
help needed….
Hello. I got an issue with my mb asusz170 pro gaming not able to detect more then 4 gpu. How many gpu can support MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon Motherboard LGA 1151.
Hi, have you updated the bios ? followed my review?
Update the bios today, still Not working. when i add 5th gpu. it is not able to detect keyboard and system reset..
what GPUs are you using ?
hi
i buy all the configuration of the 7 gpu only the ram is a gskill, when i start the rig i have no signal with hmdi , someone can help me ?`
Make sure you have all the cables connected, also HDMI should be in the card that is connected with the 16x PCIe slot.
Thank you for your reply! Everything is connected as you say and the motherboard lights up as well as the graphics card but my TV Lg has no signal so no picture but it receives a signal from the hdmi. I do not understand !
can make some photos with everything and also maybe you can record for few seconds when you power up the rig
Great write up! Thanks a ton!!
So I’m putting together my first rig with the Corsair HX1200i as you suggested, 6 sapphire rx480 with powered risers and it looks like there are only 4 more 6 pin inputs into the PSU to power the six graphics cards?? How can I power all 6 GPUs with only 4 more 6 pin inputs?
Thanks again,
AK
Hey @akashefi12:disqus , you can use two pcie cables to power two separated gpus, 1 gpu per pcie cable, like first two and with the other two pcie cables power 4 cards, 2 gpus per pcie cable.
what? can you explain this a bit further please?
Can you please suggest the right CPU and memory cards for ASUS PRIME Z270-A LGA1151 DDR4 DP HDMI DVI M.2 USB 3.1 Z270 ATX Motherboard.
thank you so much.
I already added it in the recommended parts, check for 1151 socket one 🙂
Hi,
You are a great!!!! Top guide!!!
I’m starting to build my first rig, could you please advice if the following configuration is ok?
Intel CPU Pentium G4400 1151 (3.3GHz)
Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon RX470 8GB GDDR5
MSI Z170 A Gaming Pro Carbon
EVGA SuperNOVA GQ PSU 850W
HyperX Fury 8gb RAM
SSD 120gb
I plan to start first with 1 GPU and then add others 2/3 only later.
Is it ok as configuration?
My concern are regarding the graphic card (Sapphire 470 nitro+ 8gb is ok?) and the PSU (enough 850W the power)???
Thanks a lot for your help!!!!
Hi, yes the 470 nitro+ 8gb is a good card, i also have posted a bios for that. ans for the 850w psu you can get in there around 4 gpus, if you want to add 3 more you will need to get another psu 🙂
Hi,
Great!!, Thanks for your answer.
Since i didn’t buy yet the GPU and I found all these cards, Sapphire Rx 470+ 8gb is still the best???
What I could choose is (In my country all of the following cards have almost the same price, that’s why i’m a bit confused):
MSI Radeon RX 470 8GB GDDR5 256bit PCIe (RX 470 GAMING X 8G)
Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon RX470 8GB GDDR5
XFX AMD RX 470 RS 4GB GDDR5
Sapphire AMD RX 470 8GB GDDR5 NITRO
Sapphire AMD RX 470 4GB GDDR5 NITRO
GIGABYTE Radeon RX 470 G1 Gaming 4GB GDDR5 256bit PCIe (GV-RX470G1 GAMING-4GD)
ASUS Radeon RX 480 8GB GDDR5 256bit PCIe (ROG STRIX-RX480-O8G-GAMING)
SAPPHIRE Radeon RX 480 NITRO+ 4GB GDDR5 256bit PCIe (11260-02-20G)
GIGABYTE Radeon RX 480 G1 Gaming 8GB GDDR5 256bit PCIe (GV-RX480G1 GAMING-8GD)
ASUS Radeon RX 480 4GB GDDR5 256bit PCIe (DUAL-RX480-O4G)
XFX Radeon RX 480 RS 8GB GDDR5 256bit PCIe (RX-480P8LFB6)
ASUS Radeon RX 480 8GB GDDR5 256bit PCIe (DUAL-RX480-O8G)
MSI Radeon RX 480 4GB GDDR5 256bit PCIe (RX 480 GAMING X 4G)
What do you think? which one would be the best choice for mining?
If i decide to double mining would it work well?
Thanks a lot in advance!!!!
Get the Sapphire Nitro+ ones, 470 4gb/8gb or 480 8gb.
Do you know with which RAM brand RX 580 Sapphire Nitro+ Limited Edition (11265-00-40G) comes with? Thanks @ciprianpt:disqus
And Pulse? 🙂
Not yet unboxed 😀
By various estimates eth mining will yield about 600-900USD with your 6 card rig (at current exchange rate). All well and good. But what expectations do you have for yield in 6 to 12 months as mining gets more difficult? The effort has increased by 30% a month for quite some time now, which means any gains flatten dramatically.
Not asking to be a critic, I’d love to set up my own rig. Just wondering how you square that circle?
I’m trying to calculate the same issue. You need to look at the hashrate charts for the coin type you intend to mine. Ethereum has risen fairly linearly over the last 3 months. However, if you take into account the rising value of Ethereum it seems that the ROI should be pretty constant.
The one question I have is whether there is a linear correlation between number of GPU’s in a single chassis and the overall system MH’s rate…
Hi @Ciprian V. your post has been really enlighten. Please i would like to know if the below motherboard is good and what GPU is best for it. cheers
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MSI-Z170A-Gaming-M5-ATX-Motherboard-Intel-Z170-DDR4-LGA1151-Socket-B-O-/262991624336?hash=item3d3b85b890:g:9xkAAOSwo4pYdR5f
Hi, yes it is good, i think you will have to get a skylake cpu for this to make i work properly. any gpu 🙂
Thanks for the info. i am pretty much a beginner scavenging the most effective parts. I would really appreciate it if you can guide me through the parts i should buy with a reasonable price and to mine multiple coins.
Hey Ciprian. First off huge shout out for all the help and guidance in your tutorials. My first few days of mining will be to your ETH address for sure! I was just wondering what cards you would suggest now that pretty much all the 470’s and 480’s are claimed. Has there been much bench marking of the 500 series? If so what are your thoughts on their abilities to overclock/undervolt for mining? Thanks again!
Hi, i can tell that the sapphire nitro+ and pulse 580 8gb cards are vvery good, check here https://1stminingrig.com/best-bios-rom-sapphire-nitro-rx-580-8gb-oc-hynix-memory-30-mhs/
Time to update again. The 470/480 cards are totally out of stock everywhere. Even 580 series are out of stock or over priced. I am looking used but those are spendy too.
I found Sapphire Ati Radeon Rx 580 Pulse 4gb (overpriced) in stock at local store. Not sure about power consuption nor MHs deliver. Do you have any information about this cards?
It has about a 15% increase in energy usage without an increase in mining rate. Most stores are even out of the 580s because people are so damn desperate to build rigs. I hope bitcoin drops a bit so the demand is lower.
same here. i cant find any stores carrying gpu. all on back orders 🙁
I was able to order 4 470s on amazon last week but since then they are all out of stock. They said 1-4 weeks before shipping so I may or may not get them. Time will tell.
I was able to score 2 cards from canada computers and one from NCIX. arriving within a week.
For the 580 series, are they better or worse? It might be worth buying even if overprized.
You can’t find the 400s anyway so yeah.. currently the 500s are the best.
I agree, time for an update.
I can’t find any Radeon RX 480, RX 470, RX 570, RX 580 in-stock.
What are the other options? GeForce GTX 1060 or GeForce GTX 1070? They seem expensive for the hash rate.
I have been able to get 4 470/480 and one 580 on ebay for 160-250 each. The 580 was an open box new one for $160. Definitely the best deal I got so far. I also picked up a 290 and 390. They do use a lot more energy so they are not ideal.
which one is better for roi rx470/480 or 1070?
Contact me will get ur order delivered within 5-7 working days.
Recently purchased MSI Rx 470 4gb 150 pieces.

Thank You
Also, please update with using the HP 1200w power supplies instead of the overpriced gaming ones. For 50 bucks(25 for power supply and 25 for breakout board) you have a bad ass 1200w power supply. Here is an example of the power supply. http://www.ebay.com/itm/351828539161?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Here is an example of the breakout board. http://www.ebay.com/itm/252775891683?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
About a $200 savings and server power supplies are beasts! Also, if you ever have a problem, only $25 to replace 🙂
Hi. This site is awesome and thank you for being so engaging with the
audience. I’m new to the crypto world so I decided to give mining a try
since I do need a secondary computer that’s safe to stake and mine
coins instead of a gaming laptop due to customization abilities of a
desktop. Below is my pick to start off so far:
– MSI Radeon RX 570 Gaming
– AMD FX-6300 Six Core
– Kingston HyperX Fury Memory Black 16GB 2X8GB DDR3-1600
– EVGA SUPERNOVA 750 G1 80 PLUS GOLD
– Toshiba DT01ACA300 3TB SATA3 7200RPM 64MB Cache 3.5in
– ADATA Ultimate SU800 128GB 3D Nand 2.5IN SATA III SSD
– MSI 970A Gaming Pro Carbon ATX AM3+ 970/SB950 DDR3 SATA3
My reasons why my set up is like that:
– Use to the fullest potential:
– GPU/CPU mining
– HDD mining
– RAM and CPU for staking wallets (some take a lot of RAM/CPU power)
Is my set up good for reasons stated above and in your opinion which coins are profitable to mine currently (a list)?
I appreciate your feedback 🙂
Hi, looks good… the only thing i think is too much are the rams, maybe 8gb will be enough 🙂
Thank you Ciprian V 🙂 In your opinion, which dual mining pair is best right now and if Ethereum goes POS end of year then which other pairs can be utilize?
maybe ETC 🙂
Thanks for your thoughts 🙂
Thank you. You’re awesome!
you can run 6 GPUS In this MSI Extreme Gaming AMD 970 AM3+ DDR3 USB 3.1 ATX ?
I’m unsure about that but based from this link here: https://ca.msi.com/Motherboard/970A-GAMING-PRO-CARBON.html#hero-specification
It looks like you can run 5 or 6? Please correct me, someone?
I found and ordered 6 Sapphire Radeon 470 Nitro 4g. They are not the “+” designation. Will I still be able to use these for a rig ? Or did I make a costly mistake ?? Please Help, & thank you so much for this guide Ciprian. Truly, thank you..
Hi, if the cards are Nitro non plus then most likely the memory wont me Samsung, maybe Hynix, Elpida or Micron. But should be ok 🙂
Guys, I need alternative to EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 80 in 7GPU, because in my country (Brazil) this PSU is impossible to find =x ….which other is better?
Look for anything that is certificated 80+ gold that have at least 3 PCIe cables 🙂
Ciprian, I foud these options: EVGA 750W G3 (the seller put today, i think this solve my problem o/), Corsair HX750i, EVGA 750 P2, Corsair RM750i, Corsair RM750X and EVGA 750GQ (these last two is almost 2/3 of the price of the others).
Is better go with EVGA 750W G3, right?
yes EVGA 750w g3 is good , Is an updated version of g2 as I know
x 2 Antec HCG-900 is good?
if it is 80+ gold with at least 3 pcie and 2 molex cables then it should be ok. never tested it tho
hi guys , i heard dat they dont produce those cards anymore SAPPHIRE RADEON NITRO+ RX 470 4GB OC is it true ? it seems dat they are out of stock everywhere
I have the ud3 motherboard —– is there an option to enable 6 cards in bios… I crash frequently then will have to clean install windows… please help….
try setting your operating system’s virtual memory to 20gb
Hello Ciprian greetings, first of all thank you for the guide. I have a question, is it possible to use the computer normally while mine? I would like to be able to use it for normal tasks. What do you recommend me? Thanks
Not really.. ill recommend a dedicate machine for normal task and one for mining. :
Thanks, what other video card do you recommend to mine? In my case I do not pay light. Rx are sold out everywhere
Thanks for sharing pretty good informations in here.
I can’t find thoose hardwares anywhere.
Then i am thinking what is the best alternatives for thats?
ETH wont be worth mining since of POS (Proof of stake) so the next best thing to mine is Monero or Zcash.
Zcash earns $16 in coin a day according to your numbers with 6 GPUs while Monero earns $7. So I guess Zcash it is!
This site is great, here I found a lot of information to set up my rig, in fact I am already setting up and I started buying the motherboard first, but now I have a problem it is difficult to get the rx480 or rx580 graphics card, please could you advise me to choose Another card with similar benefits.
Thank you all for your time.
if i make this set up how much i can earn in one month i live in uk , how much time it will take for mining one ethereum
If I want to build a 3 GPU rig, which motherboard + chip would you recommend me?
Try asrock h97m anniversary
Which motherboard + chip would you recommend me if I am building only 3*RX480 GPU rig?
Hi there!!
Since everyone is on the rig building train these days, it is pretty hard to find any parts. I expect 6 x AORUS Radeon™ RX580 XTR 8GB cards some time this week or the next. I just need some info on compatible motherboards. I can get my hands on an MSI Z270-A Pro but I need to establish whether it will be able to successfully boot with the 6 GPU’s.
Does anyone know of any BIOS mods and whether this motherboard is compatible with 6 of those cards?
Thanks for the great guide!!
Hi Caprian, please suggest if I can run 6 GPU rig on this board? https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z170-P/
or this
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/H170-PLUS-D3/
never tested one of those but i have seen that the Z170-P should work.,.
Thank you so much for your reply 🙂
Your blog is super helpful!
hi ciprian. ive manage to buy some rx 580: 8 gb version ( 3 Sapphire, 3 XFX) and and 6 x 4 gb version. Question is, will i have issue if i mix same GPU with different size/type of ram? appreciate your help!
Not hard for me to get 480s or 470s, little over $200 so cheaper than Amazon as well. For 8GB MSI Armor cards I’m quite happy
Umm… lucky you.. from ?
I live in Asia, where they make them pretty much. 🙂
oh.. send some here :))
Hah sure, crazy thing is… literally 2 days after writing this the prices went up like $150 and almost can’t find any 480/470s now.
I might sell my small stock on Ebay well see xD
Hey, are there any online shops that sell them that cheap perhaps? Would be cool if you could share.. or how do you get them? Thanks.
I have a local tech shop/repair place here so I have connections with a lot of the suppliers in the area. Not much in the way of online shops, and the ones there are only sell locally 😛
If I want to use this setup for 8GPU cards on a single rig, is that possible?
For starters I see I will need a compatible motherboard and perhaps a better PSU / Server PSU.
But apart from that, is there anything else that I should be aware of? Any word of caution?
When I Google up, I don’t see many 8GPU setups. Most go with 6 at most… Is my observation correct? If so, any idea why mostly 6?
Btw, great blog!
Hi @disqus_kKzFVL4JLI:disqus , for the PSU you can get 2x evga 850w , will handle 4 gpus for sure, but must be underclocked and undervolted to have a low power consumption (dual mining).
Most of the motherboards are made to work with 6 or 7 gpus, adding m2 pcie slot or any adapter is a bit risky but is should work..
Hi Ciprian,
can I go with MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon Motherboard for 8 gpu RX580 with M.2 PCI adapter? Or Asus Prime Z270-A is better solution?
Thank you in advance.
Any of this two should be good!
So I purchased the Z97 Extreme4 as its touted as a 6 gpu motherboard, but I can’t get windows to recognize more than 5, and the mining application crashes when trying to run. I disabled USB3/onboard sound/set pcie 3 and 5 to gen1. How did you get this board to run 6 gpu?
did you set your operating system’s virtual memory to 20gb?
I did set it to 16gb min as per claymore. The above link was the magic ticket (how to get 6x 5XX gpus on win 10). Is 20 better for the gpu count?
are you running 6x 500s ?
Yes, I think you may be leading to this -> I did end up following this INCREDIBLY HELPFUL guide and it was the trick I needed https://1stminingrig.com/run-6-rx-570-rx-580-gpus-windows-10/
Hi Admin,
I am new here and have a question:
Can we mine ET, ETC, ZCash and Monero with “Sapphire RX 480 8GB GDDR5”? There is no “NITRO+” model here in my area.
If yes, at what hash rate for each altcoin?
Yes you can mine, same as the nitro+ the difference is memory type which is not that good but in the end those can reach a nice hashrate
Can you please advice how can I with nice hash? Sorry for asking but I am new in mining!
Another question: As you may know ET will switch to POS before end of this year. I was told that after ET, we can not mine other altcoin such as ETC, ZCash and Monero with this graphic card because of difficulty. Can you please give some advice what we can do with that GPU of ET switch to POS?
Hey i like this guide but can you update it or if you dont have time just send me a mail what you recommend for an ethereum mining rig right now.
Because some of the hardware (motherboards, psu) is not always easily available here in Europe, I was thinking of the following setup for the base :
1) Motherboard: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/PRIME-H270-PLUS/ or https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/PRIME-Z270-P/ (as a plus, they have an onboard GPU, which I can use for the monitor)
2) CPU : Intel® Core i5-7600, 3,5 GHz
3) RAM: HyperX 8 GB DDR4-2666 Kit
4) SSD : WD Green, 240 GB SSD (or WD Blue, 250 GB SSD)
5) PSU : be quiet! DARK POWER PRO 11 | 1200W http://www.bequiet.com/en/powersupply/477 (it seems to have enough cables :1x PCI-E 6 pin and 8x PCI-E 6+2 pin)
as for the GPU’s : I’m aiming for the SAPPHIRE Nitro+ Radeon RX 570 or RX 580 8G versions (when they become available again, it seems everyone is starting mining again 🙂 )
Happy to hear any comments or feedback… Workable? Too much? Too little?
Thanks
What OS do you use on your rig?
win10 pro 64
Hello all,
I want to build my first rig, but can not find the parts I want such as motherboard and power supply (for the rest I pre-order without worries).
I come from France and the pieces are very very hard to find, would you advise me to turn to a pack like gpushack?
Do you have a viable alternative in socket 1150 motherboard? That will allow me to achieve very good performance (I’m going on double ETH / PASCAL mining with 6 RX580)
Can i take : MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon but for only 6 GPU’s ? Ty.
thank you in advance !
Hi, I’m not known with the shops in France, but have you looked at alternate.fr? Not the cheapest, but they seem to have the largest catalog/selection of hardware. I order a lot of hardware from the alternate stores in europe
Thank you. It’s ok i can purchase now 😉
HI all, the cost of putting up a rig (~2000USD) is far more expensive than getting a
Antminer S9 (~1200)? and the Hashrate is 1 million times slower? Please correct me if im wrong
having an antminer is something different than having a gpu mining rig.. ant miner is just for bitcoin..
Is it possible to mine with that graphic card : XFX RX 580 GTR XXX 8Go
??
Thank you for you answer
hi, how about gtx 1070?
good cards but expensive
Hey Ciprian right now I can’t find anywhere the PSU EVGA 1300w that you recommend, is there a chance that that I can buy 2 of the 750w but still with a 6 gpu rig. Do I need anything else to make this work? is it posible?
Setup: ASRock H81 BTC Pro, 6 x SAPPHIRE RADEON NITRO+ RX 470 8GB OC
yes you can use 2x 750w, i did it to.. ill recommend to get a dual psu adapter.. like add2psu one.
Hey Thanks for amazing post, Can you tell me if I can use MSI Z170A GAMING M3 Board for 7 GPU, it has 2x PCI-Ex16, 2x PCI-Ex1 and 3x PCI.
i am planning to use Rx 470 by Asus
nope.. it wont work… you can attach max 4 gpus check the M5 one, it has 7 gpu slots..
If I can’t find the EVGA SuperNOVA G2 1300w pay what other one do you recommend?
*psu
On ethos how to consume less kw/h ?
Hey Ciprian, I’ve waited for a while but still couldn’t find any card for the last couple of weeks.since there are no RX 470/480 or RX 570/580 in the current market. I decided to make a 6X 1070 build. Would this build work for the ETH mining, do you have any suggestion? I could take out the custom case and build my own but I don’t have much time and I want it to be tidy. Also would Biostar Motherboard TB250-BTC work for 6x 1070’s or I should go for MSI Enthuastic Gaming Intel Z170A or some other card. Thank you so much in advance.
Biostar Motherboard TB250-BTC $149.99
Intel BX80662G4400 Pentium Processor G4400 $56.81
Crucial 4GB Single DDR4 2133 $30
6X ASUS GeForce GTX 1070 8GB ROG STRIX OC $2526
SanDisk SSD PLUS 120GB Solid State Drive $60
6-Pack PCIe VER 006 PCI-E 16x to 1x Powered Riser Adapter $49.95
2X EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 $220
Add2PSU Multiple Power Supply Adapter $21
TP-Link Smart Plug w/ Energy Monitoring $40
Red Harbinger Dopamine Case $357

TOTAL : 3.510$
Hi, yep looks good.. one thing to remember.. once you finish windows installation and tweaks for mining, first thing to do is to update motherboard’s bios, in the cd with drivers there is a “bios utility” install that and use it to update, first to a backup.
how are you i need to start in this field can you told me the best card and model to start mininig
Hi Toprak! That’s a nice setup! Althought I found that the MSI Z170A GAMING M5 Motherboard have 7 PCI-e slots.
And I had read that the Fury RAMs are better for ETH mining but I could be wrong.
I have a question, What are the Add2PSU for?
Good luck!
I have a question: Is XFX R7990 good for ET, ETC, XMR and ZCash? Anybody know what PSU (watt) I should use for 4 GPUs? And if this motherboard “MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon Motherboard LGA 1151” is ok for this rig?
Hi Ciprian, I found an offer today for:
Asus 970 PRO Gaming/Aura (90 euro) and
Asus H170 Pro Gaming (around 100 euro)
on amazon for the gaming week… What do you think? are they good to mine??? or in that price I can find something better??
Thanks a lot for your help…
Hi what software are you using? I’m not sure if I should use NiceHash software or install ethos.
Thanks and nice write up and rig!!
Hey, Ciprian. I am trying to find good GPU for my first rig but now there aren’t any cards available on the market. Can you tell me what do you think about Asus Radeon RX550-4G for mining. How many MH/s do you think i can achieve with it and can you tell me some good cards that are available now on the market because i can not find any ?
550s are very low 🙁
Hi,i want to start mining and i want to invest around 3000$ on hardware , am i too late to do it?
nope.. not really..
Newegg released a small batch of 570s with a limit of one per customer. I hope thsi helps someone 🙂 http://www.ebay.com/itm/MSI-Radeon-RX-570-DirectX-12-RX-570-ARMOR-4G-OC-4GB-256-Bit-GDDR5-PCI-Express-3-/302288718194?hash=item4661cfc972:g:RnwAAOSwtZJY9ziv
Hi Ciprian
I am thinking to build this cpu to start:
* Mother MSI Z170A Pro Carbon 1151 or MSI Z270 Pro Carbon
* Micro Intel Pentium G4400 Processor
* 2 x Sapphire Radeon NITRO + RX 480 8GB OC
* 60gb SSD
* 4GB DDR4 Ram
For
now I will start with 2 GPU, then I will add more, I would also
like to know if you recommend the motherboard Z270 Pro Carbon, is newer
than the Z170 but only has 6 PCI expansions
For now is all that could buy, approximately u$ d1500
Should I just mine Ethereum or ETH + DCR?
Unfortunately I am not in Usa now, and I will have to adapt to the prices of another country!! So I am interested in the Z170 to expand it to the maximum in a time.
Thank you for the help or recommendations you can give me.
Ram
Forget one more question: what kind of EVGA do you recommend? Use 1 or 2?
Is it enough 2x “550 Watt EVGA SuperNOVA G2 Modular 80+ Gold” for runing 6 GPU “GEFORCE GTX 1060 GAMING X 3G” ?
Thank you for answer! 🙂
not really.. to make sure just go with 2x 750w.. psus also must have extra watt to spare..
Hi Ciprian
Is ”1300W EVGA SuperNOVA G2, Full Modular, 80 PLUS Gold, SLI/CrossFire, Single Rail, 108.3A, 140mm Fan, ATX PSU” is enough for 6 GTX 1070 rig ?
Thanks

Sapphire Nitro + Radeon RX 580 8 GB which only costs about 20 dollars more and not on your list
1. Ciprian, thank you for the info. Just now getting into buying my first mining rig. Before I had an assumption I have to have a very powerful PC, but from now I understand that the most important parts are GPUs, PSU, and Motherboard, and I really can buy less expensive CPU and just 8 GB Ram should work. Is this correct?
2. So, CPU and RAM don’t play a big role in mining?
3. Is there a place where we can see the list of your current Mining Rigs that you use?
4. Do you use a few Rigs mining different coins?
5. Since there are no RX 480/580 on the market now, are there any benefits of using 1060/1070/1080? or is it better to wait for RX or the new AMD Polaris to come to the market?
Thank you.
Hi, yes.. cpu and ram doesn’t play a big role, those are used just to “start the engine” 🙂
There is no list but i can tell that i made rigs with lots of different motherboards, psu, gpus etc..
Yes, i use to mine different coins, like eth, etc, ubiq..
As for the gpus, there is still long road till the rx stocks get back to normal and the 1070 should be the best choice at this moment.
thanks!
Hey all!
I have a rig with 6x asus gtx 1070
Does anyone has some optimal settings for the afterburner? (i have MSI afterburner instaled)
Hi Caprican. You are the star.
Can we use different GPUs in a Asrock H81 ? Coz, Couldnt find the RX 470/580 cards. Bought two GTX 1070, two R9 290X and two GTX 1060. Does this scenario will work ? OR I have to buy same GPU’s for single mining rig ?
Thanks
You can use any GPU but not mixing AMD and Nvidia
Hi Ciprian, What MH/s can be achieved with Sapphire Nitro AMD Radeon RX 470 8GB??
around 29 – 29.5 Mh/s, but the Nitro+ version with Samsung memory..
There is some info about RX 560 4gb ring?
i will test it soon!
alguien que hable español?
hey, Ciprian. Can you tell me what do you think about Asus GeForce GTX 1080 TURBO GDDR5X e MSI GeForce GTX 1080 8 GB GDDR5X . How many MH/s do you think i can achieve with 7 of these gpu? Can they work in the same rig?
yeah it should work… around 30 mhs per gpu
hi,what is the best power supply for 5 gpu? Does the corsair HX 1000w enough to run those 5 gpu?thanks
yeah should be enough.. if undervolted
https://steemit.com/ethereum/@everydaycitizen/ama-i-work-at-amd-in-supply-chain-for-graphics-rx-580-570-480-470
Can we use this Motherboard for 6 Nvidia GPU Rig? GIGABYTE G1 Gaming GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 (rev. 1.0) LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16813128835
Hey everyone! Firstly thanks for putting his together I followed your guides and have my first rig up and running 🤙🏻
1 problem I can get round is when adding in the 6th card.
Setup wise I’m using the Gigabyte AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX on Windows 10 with 16GB Ram, 1000W PSU, 6xASUS RX470 4GB.
All cards work individually, all on the same drivers and all the risers work in every slot.
5 run fine then when I add the 6th I get the Gigabyte logo loading screen with ‘Please wait’ which hangs.
Any ideas?
If you have this one GA-Z170X-UD5 may be you are encountering following problem but i am not sure about that you can write to Gigabyte directly:
1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x4 (PCIEX4)
* The PCIEX4 slot shares bandwidth with the M2H_32G connector. The PCIEX4 slot will become unavailable when an SSD is installed in the M2H_32G connector.
if it happens to be , do tell me also.
Hi Ciprian I want some suggestion, which option will be better of following two:
First Make My own Ethereum mining rig with six (6) RX580 which costs me around 4200 USD in India which i can start right away.
Second, Buy Antminer L3+ litecoin miner from BITMAIN worth 3000 USD(2000Usd + 1000 Usd Custom Duty to my Country) and that too shipment will reach around Ending September.
Please suggest me what will be best option with Minimum risks and better ROI. keeping in view also the rising difficulty. Awaiting a early response from you.
Both suggestions are good, depends on what you really want to mine.
Which Coin will be more Valuable in future. Ethereum or Litecoin ?
Hi Ciprian,
What are your views about Shifting of Pow to PoS in Ethereum, Then wont it a loss to build a rig now or any other suggestions about what i earlier asked ?
you can always switch to something else like etc
What about the Gigabyte GTX1070 ITX OC 8 GB ? Can I reach 30 mh/s with it under Windows or Linux? Do I have to flash something or do I need tools for overclocking? Can tools change overclocking settings for each card or is it one profile for all cards?
Hi Ciprian, could you update this post with a hint on the “MH/s drop with increasing DAG Size” – post from the 24.06.2017? I think this is a pretty big deal and ppl should consider this, if they intend to buy a rig with Sapphire Radeons 4xx 5xx. From 29 MH/s to 21 MH/s (and even worse) is kind of important if u want to get to your ROI asap.
I can only link the article, is very hard to predict this for each card and anyway that is for ethereum only..
Great article. I’m completely new so found this so interesting!
Is the 11265-09-20G (SAPPHIRE PULSE RADEON RX580 4G GDDR5) any good?
I can get it for about € 225. Trying to decide if it’s worth it..

Hi Ciprian, you rocks! I started my RIG with the Asus Prime Z270-A but not booting, not bios. I’m starting to search trough forums, any advice? Thanks in advance!
Just finished setting up all my rigs. I kinda jerry rigged 3 comps I already owned into two 5 gpu rigs and one 4 gpu rig. In total 5x 1070 5x 1060 6GB and 4x R9 380x. In all the three get about 340-350 mh/s eth using about 1500w.
Don’t buy RX cards anymore, they will lose hashrate in Ethereum over the next few months due to the DAG.
That’s for ethereum only 😉
What’s your estimated time frame to break even?
i’m waiting your best performance for Evga 1070 FTW :*
Me too!!
Hi and thank for yours information !
This week I make test with Asus Geforce GTX 1060 Dual but with 2, my hashing rate vary to 5Mh/s and 15 Mh/s But normaly is around 9 Mh/s.
Do you have idea if is normal and if I can have better ?
I mine ETH on MinerGate.
Thank for your help ! 😉
I tweak my Geforce GTX 1060 and now I have around 16 to 18 Mh/s for my 2 cards…
Is better, but I want more…. Normaly I think I can have 20 Mh/s for each card.
I continue to make my test.
Hi, you should get around 23-25 Mh/s check here https://1stminingrig.com/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1060-mining-performance-review/
I got Some MSI RX570 Armor 4g What “settings” to get the figures above
copy timings 1500 to highers 🙂
How do i do that on ubuntu
No idea.. you better do it in windows.
Which mining pool do you recommend with using this rig?
i prefer ethermine or nanopool..
I’m using miningpoolhub.com with autoexchange (to ETH or BTC, depending on the profitability) + the Multipoolminer script.
It will select the most profitable algo, and then exchange it to ETH or BTC or whatever you want (see the quickstart on the homepage)
Great guide but it seems like some of the recommendations is a little dated. The RX 400/500s are no where to be found now and the PSU are hard to find in stock. I follow and recommend this guide that is a bit more up-to-date: http://cryptosrus.com/mining-rig-ethereum/
I have a Z710A Pro carbon motherboard and I buy 6 RX580, but when I plug 4 of them the computer start but when I add the fifth there is a black screen and nothing happened What I can do ? I’am desesperate…
have you followed this instructions ? https://1stminingrig.com/msi-z170a-gaming-pro-carbon-motherboard-review-mining-performance/
I have flashed bios with custom ROM, enabled crypto-ceurrency option mining on the bios install Windows in UEFI with that link.
BUT, I have 5 GPU now mining everything is ok with that point, but when I add the sixth and power on my computer, the LED on my screen is blue still with black screen and the computer shut down himself 5 minute later
I think it’s a psu problem, on this page you tell to use ADD2PSU adapter. But I don’t know to plug which gpu on which psu, the four GPU are plugged on the main PSU with one sata cable for two GPU, VGA alimentation for this fourth one are plugged on the main PSU
The 2 last GPU are connected to the second PSU with own sata cable and VGA alimentation
I have done this very randomly, can you explain me which GPU I have to plug on the PSU ? And can you tell me if I have set my ADDPSU adapter well good, I have plug the main PSU to the MOBO, then plug the molex to the first PSU and finally plug the second PSU to the adapter ?
I appreciate your help –
is ASUS GeForce GTX 560 Ti DirectCU II good for mining ? does anyone have good number with this one?
here: https://1stminingrig.com/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1050-1050ti-mining-performance-review/
Hi,
Following this very helpful article I took the plunge and bought a MSI Armor RX 570 4G OC. My plan was to benchmark this card in my PC with a view to building a rig (probably similar to the suggestions here). Testing using latest claymore miner connected to dwarfpool I got 21.5Mhs at 120W GPUz out of the box which was pretty close to the claims here, however after many hours of investigation and much tweaking of bios, under clocking the core clock 1112Mhz (it will go down to 1004), overclocking memory 2012Mhz and under volting to 0.9v I can only get 26.7Mhs @ 116W GPUz. Can you pass on the magic formula that got you the figures in this article. What I have is not bad but what you claim is much better. I will be donating to the beer fund, found this very helpful 🙂
Hi, you could try 1130/2100 and undervolt, but before that you will have to edit the bios by copying 1500 timings to higher.
Hi, Thanks for the response. I have already edited the bios timings and its undervolted at 0.9 so thats not it. The issue with my card is that it becomes unstable >2020Mhz on the memclock what ever I do with the other settings. Im wondering if the difference is in the memory type, I have Hynix on my unit Im not sure what you had with the unit you had on test? I think Im just going to have to accept what I have (which is not bad). One last thing, I also want to benchmark it for ZCash, can you suggest some settings that work as my understanding is that the core clock needs to be higher and the overclock on the memory is not so important.
I have tested this card myself , same with hunks memory.. I copied 1500 timings and also tried with 1625.. I wasn’t able to get the card above 2000.. so the best and stable settings were 1150/1980 with a bit of undervolt, not too much… I got 29.5 29.8 mh/s… the thing is that this test was done when day was 130.. I’ll have to test the card agsin.. ill.post a tutorial and bios for that too.. hope it helps:) sorry for the delay.. so many comments to reply to 🙂
That would be amazing… If you do get round to taking another look at this card for Ethereum might you also take a look at ZCash? I am currently getting 261 H/s with the standard Bios but was hoping for closer to 300 H/s (Im not sure of how to tweak the card for other ZEC).
I also want to benchmark it for ZCash, can you suggest some settings that work as my understanding is that the core clock needs to be higher and the overclock on the memory is not so important.
As an update… i managed to get the card up to 27.5-27.8 by tweaking claymores dcri setting down to 3 even though i was in Eth only mode. I then took latest AMD driver last night but that dropped me back to 26.5 and upped power usage so going to try to roll the driver back. Is it possible you were using an even earlier version of AMD driver to get these speeds? I will update the versions in question when I’m back at my machine.
Thanks
I tested it with combined drivers only.. I’ll test it again soon
Good price, powerful, stays cool, low watt consumption!
I would add to the article at least a link to a mining calculator
https://etherscan.io/ether-mining-calculator
And even better a TIME return calculator.
For ethereum with 0.175 USD (Spain KW/h costs) this rig gives me 50 USD /month
So 40 months to break even.
thanks .. I’ll embed it 😉
Hi, can i use this PSU with my 6 RX-480+ 8gb????? 2 of this EVGA 750 GQ, 80+ GOLD 750W, Semi Modular, EVGA ECO Mode, 5 Year Warranty, Power Supply 210-GQ-0750-V1 ????????
Have a question about AMD CPU Ryzen 7 1700X @ 4.00GHz, which mobo Could I use, and I will put together with 8xNVIDIA 1070 GTX? Help plz
Hey guys, I got a little bit confused, maybe I missed something, it shows there that 1 GPU gives you approximately 20Mh/s, how come the whole rig is given us about the same? Or it includes only one GPU. Thank you very much. Sincerely, Eugene.
That info is for one gpu

Hi, if i use 10 rx 570 bios moded, will consume 1440W right? one 1600w psu can work with this system or i need to change for a better psu?
Can i use one antminer psu on this system? thanks
Its all about the undervolt, will consume a bit more because there are also around 100-200w for system only.
Can you tell me if I’m getting the most out of my rig? 6 x Sapphire Nitro (no+)RX470 4gb samsung memory, Strapped from 1750 up,I’m getting 150mh/s (25mh/s per card) Trixx settings are 1270 GPU Clock, 2000 Memory Clock, -96mv and pulling 1100w at the plug. Is there anyway to get more mh/s or to reduce the power?
You should get 29 – 30 Mh/s check this tutorial https://1stminingrig.com/sapphire-rx-470-nitro-oc-4gb-bios-flash-mod-tutorial-hynix-elpida-samsung-micron/
Also change core clock to 1130 and memory clock to 2100.
Should I update the drivers to the blockchain versions also?
So I ended up having a nightmare with this, I tried to update the driver which messed everything up. Turns out if you have strapped the GPU’s you have to to load up the original roms’s before doing the driver update otherwise the cards wont mine and you get a ‘no opencl AMD GPU’s found error in claymore. I have flashed the drives back to the original rom’s and updated the drivers to the Blockchain versions. I now can’t change anything but the mV in Trixx or Afterburner. I change the settings and apply, then when I go to change the second GPU it resets the first. Any idea whats going on?
Also all my Temperatures and fan speeds have disappeared from Claymore.
So after a complete re-install of windows I’m back up and running, uninstalled all drivers, re install blockchain drivers, tried both straps you mentioned and setting the trixx settings to the above i’m still only getting 24.6 max. It looks like trixx is not applying the settings, I tried afterburner and it wont let me change anything at all. Any idea why it wont let me overclock?
Ended up going back to 16.9.2 and everything started working again. Any chance of a 1on1 Ciprian?
Have you applied the patch after driver installation ?
I did at the time, it turns out I needed to apply the patch after I strapped. Once I did this it all worked out.
Yes 🙂
Hi @Ciprian V. am a regular follower of your 1stminingrig,can i mine with Asrock PRO Btc+ Mobo with 1 Gpu in future i can grab another 12 as well ! Does it provide any issues !
will you pls guide me or give me the circuit or image diagram of setting up the mining rig [especially providing the Power Source [PSU] ]
Pls Answer Accendingly!
========================
1. does overclocking the GPU’s reduced life span of the GPU or NOt ?
2. for example if i grab 1600w PSU [EVGA] how many GPU would be applicable to use this with 1600w PSU?
3.Basically how much amount of power is consume by Single GPU [How to Figureout] [i know it varies depends on the OEM and Models! provide Card with eg.]?
4. will you pls provide the best tutorial on setting up the Mining rig [important! i need step by step guide on PSU Connections]
5. in your point of view which would be the Best Card for Mining?
6.Do you prefer Vega Gpus for Mining ?
Hope ! You replay ! am waiting for your Replay !
Thanks
1. does overclocking the GPU’s reduced life span of the GPU or NOt ?
– Yes and No, depends how the OC is done and udervolted.
2. for example if i grab 1600w PSU [EVGA] how many GPU would be applicable to use this with 1600w PSU?
– A 1600w psu is very expensive, around $400.. i recommend 2x 850w like this one http://amzn.to/2zmCByM
3.Basically how much amount of power is consume by Single GPU [How to Figureout] [i know it varies depends on the OEM and Models! provide Card with eg.]?
– Power draw for one undervolted gpu is around 100w – 130w, for sapphire models. You can use an energy meter http://amzn.to/2yzXcC8
4. will you pls provide the best tutorial on setting up the Mining rig [important! i need step by step guide on PSU Connections]
– Yes, was one of the first tutorials i made https://1stminingrig.com/tutorial-ethereum-mining-rig-part-3-building-the-rig/ also a new one here https://1stminingrig.com/nvidia-gigabyte-geforce-gtx-1070-g1-gaming-mining-rig-tutorial/
5. in your point of view which would be the Best Card for Mining?
– Here is list with great gpus for mining
1) NITRO+ RX 580 8GB $305 http://amzn.to/2xRz6Eu
2) NITRO+ RX 580 4GB $289 http://amzn.to/2gSMpKn
3) NITRO+ RX 580 8GB SPECIAL EDITION $382 http://amzn.to/2xQN7xh
4) NITRO+ RX 570 8GB $305 http://amzn.to/2zBaGME
6.Do you prefer Vega Gpus for Mining ?
– Nope..
Hope this helps 🙂
Man ! You rocks ! thanks for faster replay !
This One You Missed I guess !

Thanks for your fast replay
No issue 🙂
Salutare.
Salut, pai ai aici in lista tot ce iti trebuie 🙂
Hi
if my motherboard Ram is DDR4 and gpu is DDR5 ,, what ll hapend it will work ???
You will have a DDR4 motherboard and a DDR5 graphics card
Hi Ciprian, I am upgrading my rig little by little due to budget constraints.
Here are some of my questions..
1. Considering my 550W PSU now, what would be my next PSU upgrade once I have the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th GPU? Let’s say, probably I can add 1 more GPU for every quarter. I cant buy the 12 GPUs in one time since it is every costly here in SouthEast Asia 🙁
2. I have a Biostar BTC-PRO mobo and Im planning to run Win 10. Is it a smart move instead to buy RX 580s or just stick with the GTX 1070s until I can complete the 12 GPU limit of my mobo?
As usual, thank you very much for the help!
Hi,
With that psu you can run 2-3 GPUs, so if you want to add more video cards you will have to get another PSU too.. :/
1070s are great cards but way too much expensive than 500s, if you have a tight budget ill suggest you to with AMD cards.. unless you can get the gtx card at the same price 🙂
Hello My friend,
I’m getting MSI Rx 470 4 GB can I purchase for mining ETH
well article. Pakistani memebers get better rates in her country just visit here http://cryptominers.com.pk/
is there a disadvantage in having 2x750W G2 vs 1x1300W G2 ? two 750W would actually cost me less than the 1300W around here.
No difference, in fact you get much more power with 2x, i also prefer using two PSUs, and as you said is much cheaper 😛
Hey,
Does any of those listed motherboards have onboard Wireless? Checked for Asus Prime Z270-A and it doesn’t, I would need to waste one PCI slot with =/
Thanks for replying and thanks for the awesome guide
is recommended to use Ethernet cable 🙂
You can always get a N class usb adapter
RX 570 4GB worth to buy for long term?
yeps 🙂
Hi Sir,
I wonder which one is the best RX 570 4GB or GTX NVDIA 1070 for long term ?
It’s that ok if i use core i5 or i7 in Motherboard Procesor ?
I am just want to try this mining.
Thank You
Hi, between this two cards 1070 is the one to go with.
Oh i see,Thank You Sir.
Can i use intel Core i5 ?is there any different if i use more higher core ?
No difference.. wasted money 🙂
Oh,Ok Sir
Thank You Very Much 😀
Awesome Advice
One more question
I just want to try NiceHash
Could you tell me which one best pool mining to used ?
What Mining Software you used for now ?
I use claymore miner
Ok Sir
Thank You for your help 😀
Hi Sir,i want to ask something again.
What wallet you used for eth or any coin ?
Hi, you can use Binance exchange: https://www.binance.com/?ref=10890278
Ok,Thank You Sir 😀
Thanks a lot for all the info. Can I ask if it is possible to use other Kingston HyperX Fury 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 apart from the CL9 DIMM – Blue because I don’t seem to be able to find this one where I live?
Does it have to be 1333MHz? Is it possible to use a 1600MHz one if using the Asrock H81 Pro BTC MB? Thanks a lot.
Hello Ciprian. 8 pcs of RX 580’s is a good number to start to mine ETH you think? How many wattage of psu you advise should I use? Thanks.
Yes is good 🙂 around 1100w
Hi
I’m new to this..does all these components fit/compatible with each other’? Or how I check which CPU fits with which motherboard?
Yes, the components are compatible, just make sure you check the socket if is 1150 or 1151.
Hey Ciprian, love the post. I’m about to purchase some more cards for long term mining. Would you say the 1070/1070ti or 1080 would be better? I run nicehash so I’m never running just 1 coin type. Thanks
Hi, 1080 performs better than 1070 on all algorithms except ethash 🙂 why not 1080ti?
I’m wanting to put my two 1070s onto a rig on their own. Could i just use a motherboard with more than one PCIe16 slot and not bother with risers? Was thinking MSIZ170A Gaming M5 as i could use it as a gaming PC when finished mining.
Hey Ciprian, love the post. I’m new to this whole mining thing and wanted to buy some cards but I was wondering. Which set would be better 6 x 1070 or 8 x RX 580. I was wondering this because for me they would be around the same price.
Also what about 6 x 1070 and 6 x RX 580. Thanks in advance.
Hi, what coins do you want to mine ?
ETH or ETH/something else
If you want to mine ETH then you should go with RX cards, price difference between GTX is big and the hashrate is almost the same.

I have ryzen 1800x and 5x rx580. I can’t worked with asus b350f gaming. Which am4 motherboard can i use more than 5 gpus?
was able to get 30.2MH/s ETH + 720MHs DCR using 100W per card with mines RX570 Sapphire nitro+ 4gb, Elpida memory
1150 clock 2100 memory, both at 875v
driver Crimsom 17.10.13
Hi, I’m planning to get Asus ATI RX 570 4GB DDR5 256Bit OC EXP edition. Is this card can give 29 to 30mh is oc and bios moded?
Really helpful guide. Been advised to buy RX Vega 56 or 64 cards over RX 580. What are your thoughts on that? Better to get 4x RX580 or 2x RX Vega or 2x GTX 1070? About the same $$$, flexible on what to mine. Thanks.
Hey @disqus_hipjmngUtM:disqus , unless you plan to mine only CryptoNight coins, yep you can go with vegas. Currently those are performing great on that algo.
Thanks for the tip. I’d prefer a wider range of options so maybe the 1070 route is better…. confusing 😉
Thanks to your advice here I went the GTX1070 route with a ASRock H81 PRO BTC R2.0 board. Can’t find a Celeron G1840 processor easily. What would be another good 1150 option? Cheers.
The best i could find is http://amzn.to/2EFPfMG
Thanks
how to connect 7 GPU on gigabyte z170x-UD5 ?
HS110 work in 220-240v?
Yep..
My doubt is in a rig of 6x, do you think I can use multiple versions of graphics cards or they all must be the same?
Is been difficult to get the graphics cards. It seems to be a global issue. I see a few gamers actually complaining about the fact the price going too high and we can’t buy as in many places they are out of stock. When you find is limited to 1 piece per person.
Yes you can mix them 🙂
