Sapphire RX 470 Nitro+ OC 4GB Bios Flash / Mod Tutorial (Hynix, Elpida, Samsung, Micron) 30+ Mh/s

A couple of days a go i sold my 6x 370s and bought 3x Sapphire Nitro+ RX 470 4GB OC instead and was the best decision because i got higher hashing speed with lower watt, from 750w to 400w.

I guess now most of new and old miners know that the RX 470s 4GB are the most efficient cards to mine with, at least for Ethereum, ZCash, Monero, PascalCoin etc..

In this tutorial i am going to show you how to modify and flash BIOS to your RX 470s, this will increase the GPU hashrate substantially. My RX 470s went from 22.xx Mh/s at stock settings to 24.xx with modded bios and 29.xx with overclock and undervolt. So i got a much higher hashrate and at the same time low watt consumption with better hashing speed, around 70w to 80w per card.

The thing is that not all cards are the same, for example there are 4 different types of memory #1 Hynix (31.xx Mh/s), #1 Elpida (31.xx Mh/s), #2 Samsung (28.xx Mh/s), #3 Micron (22-24.xx Mh/s), read more about the memory types and how to spot them here. I wasn’t that lucky to get a Hynix or Elpida but i got a Samsung instead, which is better than Micron :), after few days of struggling and testing i was able to get a nice and decent hashing speed of 29.xx Mh/s on Ethereum, most of miners are reporting 28.xx Mh/s maximum hashrate but for some reason i was able to push the cards a bit more.

Right now i am going to share with you my BIOS mod for Sapphire Nitro+ RX 470 4GB OC, specially with Samsung memory but i will include in the tutorial how to mod and flash the cards with Hynix, Elpida, Micron also two Reference models. Also ill show you what driver version, software and tools are needed to flash and modify bios.

To make the things even clear this is the exact card i am using in this tutorial:

1 Download and install/extract the following

Sapphire RX 470 Nitro+ OC 4Gb Modded Bios for Samsung Memory

Save original Default BIOS

  • Shut down your rig
  • Remove all the GPUs and leave only one plugged, my recommendation is to flash the cards one by one
  • Start the rig and Extract ATIFlash 2.74 to C: in a folder like “atiflash“
  • Run ATIWinflash.exe as administrator, click on “Save” button to save the default BIOS (make sure the RX 470 card is selected), give it a name like Sapphire470defaultBIOS.rom
  • Click “ok” and “continue“
  • Once the BIOS is saved close ATIFlash

Silent BIOS Switch

  • Shutdown your rig again
  • Switch BIOS to silent mode (towards the HDMI cable side)
  • Start the rig

Save original Silent BIOS

  • Open ATIWinflash.exe as administrator
  • Save the BIOS again, this time give it a name like Sapphire470silentBIOS.rom

Modifying / Modding the BIOS

Sapphire RX 470 Nitro+ OC 4GB Samsung Memory Bios Mod & Flash
  • Start GPU-Z to find out what type of memory does your GPU have, make sure you use the correct ROM to flash the card
  • Start Polaris Bios Editor
  • Open Sapphire470silentBIOS.rom
  • On TIMING (MHz) area copy 1750 timings to 1900 and 2000, or you can try to copy from 1625 to 1750, 1900 and 2000
  • Save the modded BIOS like Sapphire47modded.rom
  • Close Polaris Bios Editor

Flash the BIOS with ATIFlash 2.74

  • Start ATIFlash 2.74
  • Load the image Sapphire470modded.rom
  • Click on “Program” button
  • Wait about 30-60 seconds till you get the message “Your VBIOS was programmed successfully“, click OK
  • Restart the rig and test

  • Start Sapphire Trixx
  • GPU Clock: 1150
  • Memory Clock: 2050 (you can start from 2000 and increase, i can go up to 2050, 2070. The 2100 is not that stable)
  • mV: -100
  • Apply modifications

    Thanks for posting this! Great guide. Any reason you used the AMD 16.9.1 drivers instead of the 17.2.1 drivers that were available when you made this guide? In fact I just checked and it looks like a few days ago the 17.3.1 drivers were made available for download. Is there something wrong with the v17 drivers or something preferable to the v16 one?

      Hi, 16.9.1 and 16.9.2 drivers had the best results, good hashrate, good stability.

      Yes, the ROM is already modified with 1625 TIMINGS. Shut down your PC, switch the jumper to the other side, turn it on and flash the ROM.

      But ill recommend to use the 1750 timings .. this is what i use.. try 1625 an see if it works, if not reflash with 1750

    Starting with 16.12.2 AMD re-enabled BIOS signature checking and I installed the latest release 17.3.1 not realizing that so my modded BIOS’s no longer work. Do you know of a way to bypass the signature check and still use their latest Radeon software release?

    i’ve flashed the 1750 timing, and put 1150 on core and 2070 on mem with ethos

    but i’ve only 26,3 Mhs…

    Why ?
    The undervolt is for the performance ?

    Thank you very much for this overclocking guide! As soon as I read this guide I went to buy a Nitro+ 4GB this week, and CPU-Z confirmed the GPU to have HYNIX memory.
    I followed every part of this guide:
    * copied 1500 memory timings to the remainder.
    * 1150 MHz gpu clock, 2080 MHz mem clock.
    * undervolted to -96mV (MSI Afterburner would not let me go to -100mV)

    I now run Claymores Miner v8.1 and my Nitro+ is doing 29.2 Mhz for Eth mining exclusively.

    The issue is though, how can I actually push my HYNIX memory GPU to perform at 31 Mhz?

      Hi @julesflying:disqus, try reseting the -mV then increase memory clock to 2100, if stable you can go higher 2120 maybe 2150! Let me know how that worked!

        Hello Ciprian, thanks for the tip I will definitely give these new settings a try and get back to you on the results.

        BTW I also have 2 other MSI rx470 8GB cards, but both have the dodgy “Micron” memory chips. Nevertheless I was able to mod them and they are hashing in Claymore ETH miner @27 MHz.

          Looks like you are lucky, most people reported that they were unable to mod the bios no matter what.. the card was very unstable.. 🙂

            Hi Ciprian, yea the MSI rx470 8GB ram is definitely Micron. I attached my GPU-Z screenshot below, and it says its DDR5 Micron. Before I read your article about “How to spot memory types” I was clueless about memory quality 🙂

            I am also definitely getting at least 27 Mhz on my Micron ram from Claymore miner mining ETH.

            i own 3 sapphire oc+ 470 4 gb hynix. no one run stable with gpu @ 1150 voltage -100 mv and memory clock 2080. i got other 2 elpida and 2 samsung that running great.

            no one hynix card running stable at 1150 gpu and 2080 ram clock.
            After Many tries i realize that the downvoltage kills the system. i’m still looking for best setting.

            i also realized the firmware i got with memory time shift is different from the one i downloaded here. i copied the timing value in 1550 to 1625 1750 and 2000 in the silent original hynix bios

        Ok I just concluded my round of new overclocking tests for my Nitro+ 4GB Hynix memory.
        I have included some screenshots below of what parameters I am currently using now that is most STABLE and POWER efficient for me.

        But the highest stable settings I could reach on my Nitro+ 4GB Hynix with MSI Afterburner was:
        Core voltage = +0 mV
        Core clock = 1150 MHz
        Memory Clock = 2120 MHz
        GPU Power draw = 99 W
        Claymore Hashrate = 29.5 MHz

        Now, I am just using:

            Ok good tip! I shall lower core gpu clock to 1130Mhz. I did not realize there was a correlation with gpu clock to power consumption. I only had very good power savings with undervolting.

            Yes, I was able to get stable hashing at maximum 2120Mhz with my Nitro+, but I had to set my voltage back to +0 mV (ie. no change from factory default). This caused my Nitro+ card to draw ~99 Watts.

            But instead I can now stably hash eth with Claymores miner at 29.2 MHz with undervolting (-66mV), GPU clock = 2080MHz, which draws 83 Watts at 100% mining utilization.
            My Nitro fans are spinning at ~30% very very silent, and GPU temperature is at 72 degrees celcius.

            I found that if I undervolt (-96mV), I draw 79 Watts but the Nitro+ GPU fan loses its automatic settings after a few hours into mining, and starts getting very noisy spinning at higher RPM!! I cannot fix the fan automatic speed until I reboot the computer again.

            Sorry I forgot to mention that when I pushed my Nitro+ Hynix card to memory clock = 2120 MHz , I was only getting 29.5 MHz hashrate from Claymores.
            But at 2080 MHz mem clock speed, I am getting 29.2 MHz,

    hello Everyone actually i’m running 2 samsung, 1 elpida and two hynix 470nitro + 4gb.
    i’m gettin around 29 mhseth mining and seems to be stable the samsung and elpida one.
    different case with hynyx one.
    i’ve tried to flash both the rom i’ve found here and even the one create by me following Ciprian’s guide.
    in every case the two hynix card crash and kill the system and i’ve to force reboot.
    i’ve even tried to connect it directly to pcie 16x
    possible 2 hynix card fu..ed up?? pls help

        yes i tried the cpu connect by 16x riser to the main pci-e.
        both card results unstable using 1500 timing.
        they are pretty stable with 1625 timing. but i get just 25 mhs instead of 29 that all others gpu runs at.
        must i give the two hynix ram gpu back??

            16.9.2 running on a MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon 8gb ram and celeron cpu running on a win 10×64 with registry tweak i’ve found here . also power consumption is 930 w with 6 gpu, and mining eth with dual mining disabled is this ok?. i was think about defective card but i got same results oth both hynix cards (maybe same lot?) i have few day to keep them or return.       That said, I had heaps of luck with my nitro+ 4gb, running high speed and low voltages, until i moved it to a different motherboard! Now it won’t do 2050 even at normal voltage!

    Pulling 28.6 @ 65.3w (gpuz)

    Copied the 1500 strap. Finished off the fine tuning with wattool.

    1126/818,2050/850 (probably could drop that 850 lower)

    Regarding the 818 – Confirm the VOUT! If vout isn’t going down to 0.838v, then the “818” isn’t taking effect. You need to add 818 to the other GPU clocks (i.e P5).

        I noticed that setting the mv on the gpu doesnt always do anything.

        i.e it was on 818, and I upped it, but VOUT didn’t go up until I got to 851. 850 had the same vout as 818, so presumably the BIOS was actually not accepting 818

        And yes I have downloaded the Elpida rom…
        The srtange thing is that one of the cards (they are 2 470 nitros without + , and one 280x dual-x with hynix ) must be in the pci16x slot not on risers to work at full hashrate … I just download the same 16.1 driver as you recomend… the old one was 15.12
        At one time I copyed you timings in my file using Polaris – line by line from up to down , and …it said succsess !,…but after restart the monitor stayed black but on power!

    Hello. Could anyone help me please ? I got 6x 470 nitro+oc 8gb. Could anyone share settings or bios for this card please ? I can’t seem to find any information. And I have heard reports the nitro 470 are dieing because the thermal tape on the vrms are melting causing an oily residue which ends in a short. Is this true ? Thanks guys

      Start the windows with normal switch bios, then when windows booted and everything started switch bios to bad one, then open atiflash and program the original bios or modified one. it will work..

    A1630 -> 1100 – 2000 – -25mv – 92W @ 28.0MHs
    A1715 -> 1100 – 1950 – -00mv – 95W @ 24.3MHs

    The graphics card with the A1715 memory works a lot badly.

    At the A1630-Card the PolarisBiosEditor worked perfectly, the A1715 I can not see the timing. I flashed the A1630 BIOS on the A1715 graphics card. It works, the graphics card is also 2MHS faster, but whether I enter 1750, 1850 or 1950 (Mem Speed), the A1715 card always remains at 24.3 MHs. (More than 1950MHz does not work)

    Do you have any idea?

        With the new BIOS i unfortunately only 21MHs. With a bit of OC (1100/2050) i get 23MHs. More is not possible 🙁

        EDIT: I go up to 1260/2100 / -100mV @ 95W = 23.78MHs
        My “old” Bios has max. 1950MHz Mem Speed. The Card runs better, but 23.7MHs are not good 🙁

            Same Problem here. I just received four of those cards. Have copied the 1500 timings(1: and 2:) to 1626,1750 and 2000. this gives me around 24,5 MHs and I can lower the Watts to 85w by undervolting all the way up to -200mv and reducing the GPU clock to 1050. Increasing the memory clock does not affect the speed. If someone has an idea how to increase the hashrate please comment.

However the power consumption is quite high (110w compared to 75W on my RX480), I have tried to undervolt using Sapphire Trixx but it becomes unstable around -100mv. Do you think I could lower the power consumption by adjusting the values for GPU frequency and/or voltage using watttool? Below is a screenshot of the GPU freq and voltage.

            P.s. what is the difference between the 1: and 2: timings?

    Hi, I have Saph Nitro+ 470 4GB Hynix, download from comments modded bios. After mod bios on my graphic cards (6 cards), they work on 1090/1940. And that is ok, but I measured power consumption!

    This rig uses power 1030W. Other rigs consume about 850W power.
    When do undervoltage to -72 or -90, consumption is reduced to 1003v. I think that my bios is not good. Can anyone tell me how to reduce fuel consumption.

            No go 🙁 The card is not found if I use any drivers older than version 17 now. I have used the DDU and still no go. I am using the stock driver, not the updated silent driver.

    So I flashed my Saph Nitro+ 470 4GB Hynix as instructed, everything seemed perfect, got 28.5 with the stated settings (more or less: had 2 sets of strands in memory timings, copied both 1500 values to their respective 1625, 1750 and 2000). Did the same with 2 other cards. Then tried running two cards together and the problems started: at first an error from windows and nicehash, after restart black screen. When I finally managed to get into windows, gpu-z wouldn’t show any clock or temperature values, same with Trixx. After flashing back to original silent bios, same problems. Reinstalled drivers many times until for some reason sensors started showing values and now everything seems back to normal.
    Any suggestions?

      Yes, without the + there is no bios switch, check for latest polaris bios editor you can see the right timings with that. then you can copy from 1500 or 1600 to higher.

    Hey I bought the most recent sapphire nitro + oc 4gb batch (11256-01-20G) and I followed your tutorial and hynix memory modded bios. At 1150 1950 I am using 103 watts with -mv 90. Is there something not working well or is this type using more wattage?

    I soon gonna let it run at 1150 / 2000. -mv 100. Or 2050 depends whats stable.

    Going 1050 crashes 1 or more cards straight away.

    This high wattage kinda forced my 6 gpu rig to only 5 gpu only 1000 watt psu. It now uses like 870 watts average. Maybe I can’t change it further. But let me ask it just for sure.

    Edit:

    Currently I notice I am using a bios close to it but not exactly your settings. So let me first see yours hylix and see if I can get my wattage lower before coming to conclusion that lowering wattage is not working for me. I will test this tomorrow. 1 strap is diffrent and the power tune tdp from 85 to 100. Not sure if that matters.

    The RX580 version costs more than 350€ and I am not wiiling to pay so much for them.

    I could not find any info on the memory chip brand. Do you think the RX470-8GB version is worth the money? What about power consumption. I want to put a GPU in an old build of mine with specs:

    I did EXACTLY what you did here (and like other tutorials), the only difference is that I’m using a SAPPHIRE RX 480 NITRO+ 4 GB (SAMSUNG), and after I reboot, when I try to start the claymore miner it says “no AMD OPENCL or Nvidia CUDA GPUs found, exit”. and it closes.

    I have no idea, I tried everything yet and got to no solution. I downloaded exactly what you mentioned here, including the AMD 16.9 driver, so please, light me up if you can of what could be the problem!

      Hi, i got the exact problem as you, after searching for the solution i found out that the new amd driver wont allow you to use bios. All you have to do is to patch it. Follow this step:
      1. Mod your bios (DONT RESTART)
      2. Patch it
      3. Restart and done.

      No need to change cable.. you can overclock all cards there… are you using trixx or msi afterburner?

        With afterburner it works however I can’t control the voltage. Tried all possible selections but stays greyed out.
        Managed to sort it out with trixx at the end.
        Now I have another question – I have a rig with 6 RX470. The power consumption although is quite high I think – 980. If I disable one GPU it goes down to 910, 70 watt per GPU is what we shall expect. Without any GPU, it is around 100 watts. So how come this difference of 980 – 100 – (6×70) = 460 watts appears? Are you using all powered risers in your rig(s)?

          If they are non plus models, then you need to open your Trixx, reset all 6 cards to normal settings, and one by one, ONLY undervolt. So close your miner, in trixx reset to default, and go in and undervolt. Try -66mv for all six cards, then reload your miner, and see if your power draw doesn’t correct itself.

    I just followed your tutorial. Somehow I didn’t get much improvement from just the memory timings, but overclocking/undervolting got me from 24 to 28 MHs. So, thanks for that. I do have a question however : if I take my modded GPU to my linux/ethos mining rig (alongside 5 original-rom gpus), I lose the extra MHs. Now, I’m using Claymore to test the modded GPU on Win10, and ethos seems to be running genoil’s ethminer. I would have expected the modded GPU to perform better on linux/ethos, why is that not the case ? Do modded bios’es only work on Windows ?

    I want to use Z170A GAMING PRO CARBON to mining crytocurrencies, so I got 7 GPU’s but I can run just 4. With 4 gpu or less is well working with linux(simplemining). More than 4 gpus is not working. I updated the bios. When I enable the 4g decoding option on bios. the OS (both linux and windows10) does not start.       hi mate,
      your windows 10 installation should be in uefi or it should support uefi in bios not legacy……windows hardrive should be in gpt format…..other wise the above 4g setting won’t work and u will get a black screen when u try to boot in to windows 10…….Iand you will have to use the16.9.1 driver .

      This could be a motherboard issue but it’s also a known AMD driver issue. Search for “AMD 6 GPU patch”. Download that, run it with administrator privileges and then reboot. It solved my problem. My Asrock Pro BTC would only recognize 5 cards until using that patch. There are also patched drivers the could do the trick as well. Search for them on YouTube.

    I bought four RX 470 4GB Nitro (non plus) with Hynix/Elpida memory (according to ATIWinFlash) and 2 with Samsung memory. All of the cards BIOS ROM’s are 256k in size. I’ve tried pulling them using the ATIWinFlash GUI and with GPU-Z. Each time I get a 256k ROM file. I believe these new variants are different than what you’re talk about here. Anyone have any experience modding these cards?

    As you see in the screenshots, GPU-Z shows the memory as Hynix BUT Polaris shows two vendors (Hynix and Elpida ) in VRAm section.

    I`ve connect only one card for now, It gives 19.8 Mh/s :(( .

    Is it possible to improve the speed to 25 mh/s at least ?

    I’m trying to mode the bios for my RX470 Sapphire Nitro 4Gb Samsung memory. I don’t have a switch for the bios, i have 2 switches. (you can see in the attached pictures more detalis). The problem is that with the moded bios the card is either not detected anymore by the claymore, or when it worked (after many retries) is not going higher than 14Mh/s. Right now i’m mining ETH+DCR at 26 Mh/s and 780 Mh/s per board. I’ve tried to copy the valuse freo 1700 to 1900 and 2000, but also to copy the values from 1625 to 1750 1900 2000. None of them working. I also used the bios.rom you have uploaded but is says ID Mismatched. Do you think it’s possible to mode the bios to go at least 28Mh/s ?
