Just as Bitmain announced the new Antminer D3 which is supposed to deliver 15 GH/s, Baikal made a step forward too and released a new ASIC that is meant to outperform its predecessor – the Baikal Giant A-900.

The Baikal Giant + works with six different algorithms, which are: X11, X13, X14, X15, Quark and Qubit.

The price of this new miner is somewhere between 6.000 and 8.000 USD. Baikal accepts BTC, DASH, and LTC as payment.

Baikal charges the lowest price per unit; however all of the Giant+ were already sold out. Third-party sites like Aliexpress still have the ASIC on stock, thought at an elevated price.

Profitability

If you have checked my Antminer D3 review, you are familiar with my thoughts on the prospects of Dash mining. In September of this year, both Bitmain and Innosilicon will be releasing really cheap ASICS that feature 15 GH/s and 30 GH/s hashrate, respectively. Once that happens, mining difficulty will go up drastically and the income from a 2 GH/s miner might go from $ 985/month to about $ 200/month.

As for today, you can expect an income of $ 985/mo. We still got two months left till Antminer and Innosilicon start shipping their new miners.

Prospects

All of the mentioned probably means that the Giant+ will have a ROI of at least a year. Obviously, this depends on the amount of super fast miners that will be sold by the two mentioned companies. This is mostly limited by their manufacturing speed of the miners, since the demand on them is rather high.

For example, some day ago Bitmain announced the presale of the Antminer D3 and all of the units were sold out in a matter of hours.

However, there is a bit of controversy regarding Bitmain which might be good news for the Baikal miner. After reading multiple reviews I can conclude that Bitmain uses their freshly-manufactured ASICs on their farms first; then, after some months of usage, the company sells the used miners to people. Or at least that is what has been happening with the previous versions of the Antminer.

Several users noticed that the supposedly “new” Antminers they purchased from Bitmain had obvious signs of heavy usage. Signs like dust and dirt on the fans make us come to the conclusion that the “new” miners probably spent half year working for Bitmain first. Same happens when people receive supposedly “new” spare parts from Bitmain during warranty claim processes.

If that is the case with the D3 too, then we might expect that Dash mining difficulty boom won’t be as bad once the ASICs will be shipped to people, simply because those ASICs are already mining today.

Now, there is also controversy with Innosilicon. The company often sells products that fail to deliver all the good things that were advertised. Therefore, it is probably that Innosilicon’s A5 DashMaster might not perform as fast and flawless as they claim on their website.

That being said, I do believe that the A5 DashMaster will still increase mining difficulty considerably. However, the mining difficulty increase might not be as steep as some picture it.

Finally, please get me right – by no means am I bashing on Bitmain or Innosilicon. You can do your research and find the same info and reviews online. It is up to you whether you take those reviews and commentaries into account or discard them. In fact, I already reviewed the Antminer D3 where I listed all the pros and cons; the Innosilicon A5 DashMaster is the next one I am going to review on this blog.

So far I’ve been only talking about the Baikal Mini Miner and the Baikal Quadruple ASICs. As stated in previous articles, both of them give impressive results. They are small, power efficient and very profitable.

Today I’d like to review the Baikal Giant-A900, which is the biggest and most powerful miner in the series. It is designed to mine six algorithms, including the X11, X13, X14, X15, Qubit and Quark. Just like its smaller versions, this miner is tailored to mine DASH crypto coin.

In this review, I will go over the miner specs, then I will show how to set it up and finally I will elaborate on why I believe DASH is one of, if not the best coin to mine as for today.

Specs

The A900 main feature is the amazingly low power consumption. With a hashrate of 900 MH/s, the miner pulls only 216 W from the wall. This is one of the main reasons why people choose the A900 for home mining.

The package does not include a PSU, but a generic ATX one will get the job done.

Profitability

900 MH/s is a lot, especially because DASH price is going up lately. According to Cryptocompare and Coinwarz, you can expect an income of somewhere between $690 and $710 USD per month. This includes electricity costs with an average price of 0.10$/KWh. This is quite impressive considering that the miner costs $2,380.0.

All of this means that the Giant-A900 has probably one of the top ROI among ASIC miners, taking only roughly 4 months to break even.

Features

The Giant-A900 is a straightforward DASH crypto coin miner. It is really easy to configure and use. It does not have or require any additional tools to perform as it does. However, here are a couple of handy features that you might find interesting:

Multi-pool mining – the Giant-A900 supports most DASH pools. It offers eight pools to choose from plus it allows you to add as many custom pools as you need.

Smart algorithm switch – This is yet another handy feature of the Giant-A900. It guarantees you optimal mining efficiency since the miner will always choose the most profitable algorithm to mine. In brief, all you have to do is specify your mining pool and wallet; the rest is done automatically.

Cooling and Noise Levels

The A900 comes with two coolers, which keep it at a stable temperature even in summer days (though keeping the miner in a cool room is advisable). Now, this also is reflected in the noise levels, which are 65 Db for both the power supply and the miner.

Set-Up

One of the main things that set the Baikal Giant-A900 apart from its smaller counterparts is the assembly time. Due to a different architecture, the A900 requires some extra cable connections. The steps are not hard to follow; however I will try to be as detailed as possible here.

Before we get started, I’d like to quickly review all the elements we will be operating with.

As seen in the image, this is what is included in the box:

On the top part of the miner we got the Power Module and the Orange Pi One board:

The miner contains two fans, one from each side of it. One side has the fan alone, while the other one also includes 10 ports:

Now let’s connect the Output of the master board to the Input of the slave one. The picture might show it better:

We’re almost set at this point. All we have to do is connect the power supply to the miner. Make sure to turn off or unplug the PSU from the wall first.
We’ll use the 8-Pin double PSU connector cable. The single side goes to out PSU, while the double side goes to our two miner boards. Once done, we just turn on the PSU and we’re good to go!

Software Configuration

Just like the other Baikal miners, the A900 has three LED lights. The red one turns on when the miner is running. The blue one starts to flash as soon as the miner turns on. This indicates that the miner is attempting to connect to the internet. This usually takes less than one minute, after which the blue light remains turned on without flashing. If by some reason it keeps flashing for longer than 3-4 minutes, it means that there’s an issue in the PSU or the internet connection.

Once established, all you have to do is go to your router configuration, check the IP of the miner, and use it to log in to the A900 control panel. Use the following login and password (Lower case “b”, both password and login are the same): baikal

Once you are there, make sure to configure your wallet address and your mining pools.
As I mentioned before, the miner supports multiple pools. You can add more than one to the list and establish priorities. If the current pool becomes inactive for some reason, the miner will instantly switch to the next one, according to the priority you’ve established.

That’s it – set up and configuration will take you only a couple of minutes, after which you can start enjoying the mining process.

A Little Bit More About DASH

Before I conclude today’s post, I’d like to elaborate a little bit more on DASH. According to crypto currency experts, DASH is one of the best coins to mine as for today. There are several reviews where people analyze the crypto coin development, its team and the progress that was made so far.

What I concluded from their analyses is that DASH is one of the few coins that have a highly-skilled team of programmers with a working plan. In addition to that, DASH community is supportive and active. Finally, the coin is being traded a lot – the amount of DASH transactions steadily increases from month to month. All of this gives me reasons to believe that the coin won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

I could say that the Baikal Giant-A900 is one of the best miners available for home crypto coin mining. It is compact, power efficient and really profitable. 4 months ROI might seem a lot for those of you who are new to crypto coin mining, but do keep in mind that the usual ROI for ASIC miners is somewhere between 9 and 13 months!

The only downside that comes to my mind is the noise levels of the miner. 65 Db is not a lot, but it still can be annoying, especially for those who live with you. 2300 dollars is also rather a big investment. However, good news is that you can always purchase the Mini Miner first and then switch to something bigger.

1. Baikal Mini Miner Review – Introduction

You probably already heard about the Baikal Mini Miner ASIC before. It is a compact miner that is meant to work with X11, X13, X14, X15, Qubit and Quark algorithms, and people usually employ it to mine DASH.

The miner was launched in mid 2016. Back in the day, it was like any other miner concerning ROI; it was, however, the less power-demanding miner on the market. With a power consumption of only 40W per 150Mh/s, the Baikal is one of a kind.

After the release, the miner received many positive reviews. At first, some users had a grim outlook on the miner – they speculated that after the release of a popular DASH miner, the profitability of DASH mining would go down.

A year passed since then and surprisingly enough, the profitability of DASH mining only increased. This is hard to believe, but as by march 2017, it became almost 2 times more profitable to mine DASH with the Baikal Mini Miner than when it was a year ago.

There were two factors that affected profitability. First, the price of the miner went from $500 dollars to $300. Back in the day you had the option to get the miner a bit cheaper, for about $400 per unit if you’d buy four units.

Secondly, despite some predictions, the profit per day in US from mining DASH remained the same, which means that the ROI of the Baikal Mini Miner is almost as twice as better. It went from about 9 months to 5 months. That’s some crazy ROI for an ASIC miner, since the usual ROI is between 9 and 12 months.

This is why we decided to revisit, review this miner and take a closer look at it.

2. Specs and Features

As we already mentioned, the Baikal Mini allows you to work with six types of algorithms. This was a huge innovation back in the day, and it still remains a rare feature among modern ASIC miners.

Assembly and Set-up

The miner is easy to set up. It comes fully assembled in a compact box (Dimensions: 140mm x 100mm x 95mm). The box includes an OrangePi (clone of RaspberryPi) board with an Ethernet module and a complete cooling system. The boxes can be easily attached the one to the other and assembled into one single rig. This means that if one day you decide to add more miners to your office, you won’t have to worry about additional space for the extra modules.

Baikal Mini comes with a tool called BaikalScanner, which allows you to easily find the needed IP address to connect to the setup page. Once connected, you have to configure your mining preferences. This means choosing your pools, setting up priorities and so on. The factory password to the setup page is “baikal” with a lower case “b”. The same goes for the username. You can change that once you log in to the control panel.

Please notice that the miner does not require a PC to function. You will need a PC only to set it up, configure it and monitor the work progress.

Back Up

Baikal comes with a GPLv3 licensed OS, which can be downloaded from the official Baikal site. This allows you to reinstall your miner OS quickly and easily. Before you do that, you can also save your mining settings. The backup is done from the miner interface, which means that you don’t have to download any additional tools. The interface is browser-based.

3. Hashrate/Wattage Ratio

First of all, it is worth mentioning that the miner comes with no power supply. It does however works with any generic 12V DC power supply with a barrel 5.5×2.5mm connector. Since the Miner power consumption is only 40W, there is no big issue in finding a power supply that would be compatible with it.
Some users recommend using a 96W 8A power supply to ensure stable work of the unit, while others state that a 5A power supply is enough.

Now, in the case you want to assembly a rig of Baikal miners, you probably would like to purchase the four unit pack from their official shop since it comes with a PCI-E connector. This allows you to connect it to a regular 150W PSU, though a 300W one would be more advisable.

You can say that when it comes to hashrate/power usage ratio, the Baikal Mini Miner excels compared to other ASIC miners. This is why the miner is mostly popular in Holland and other countries that have high electricity costs. People who live in USA States like New York, Connecticut and Alaska could greatly benefit from the low power consumption as well.

Hashrate

The miner provides a stable 150 Mh/s +/- 1 hashrate on all algos and pools. It is, however, advisable to test all available mining pools, because some might perform better than others. There are many factors involved, and the miner configurable priority system is your best ally.

Also, please notice that the miner takes some time to stabilize the hashrate. It averages at 150 Mh/s, but don’t get too excited if it reaches the 160Mh/s mark for a dozen of minutes.

Cooling

The Baikal Mini Miner plays it cool. Low power usage means that the miner does not need intense cooling. It comes with a cooler, but it is not a heavy one, and several users report that the miner works really quiet. There is no consensus on the exact amount of DB, but it is clear that the noise level is far below the 50DB mark (quieter than a laptop fan). This makes it a great choice for home crypto mining.

4. Conclusion

Mining DASH was profitable back in mid 2016 and it’s still profitable now in 2017. In fact, you can say that it became even more profitable today than it was a year ago. There are mere speculations on how things will go from now on, but as for today, a Baikal Mini Miner ASIC can be a great investment with a decent ROI.
