It is not rocket science that the longer a cryptocoin is being mined, the more is the mining difficulty and thus the less is the profitability. In the case with Ethereum, the mining performance decreases over time due to the increase of the DAG file size. More size puts more stress on the mining GPUs, which lowers their efficiency.

However, this is only part of the story. The real issue is that a great drop in Ethereum hashrate is expected for Radeon RX 400 / RX 500 series in the next couple of months. By ‘great’ I mean up to ~30% hashrate drop, which will increase gradually.

What Are the Causes?

According to statistics, users mine 30.000 blocks every 4-5 days. This amount of blocks is called a DAG Epoch. Every time we move to the next DAG epoch, the DAG file becomes larger. This means that weaker GPUS will have a harder time handling it. We are currently at DAG epoch #130. Once we hit DAG epoch #150 or so, the increased size of the DAG file will cause RX400 / RX500 GPUs to work with about 30% less efficiency. Since the file size growth is gradual, the performance decrease will be gradual too.

Did this happen before?

Yes, indeed. If you remember, the AMD Radeon R9 280X GPUs suffered from the same kind of hashrate drop past year. Looks like the RX 400 / RX 500 are next in the list. Now, the newer and more powerful cards such as Nvidia Pascal GPUs, as well as the R9 290(x), / R9 390(x) that feature more video memory (6GB/8GB+) won’t be significantly affected.

What Is the Takeaway from This?

First of all, you might want to consider newer GPUs for any future rigs you are going to build instead of the classic Radeon RX400 / RX500s. Or even if you are going to use them, it might be a good idea to include the 30% hashrate drop in your profitability calculations.

The second takeaway is that after all, video memory matters. GPUs with more video memory tend to stand the increase of DAG file size longer. Next time you’re getting a new GPU rig, you might consider the GPU memory amount; even though it might not affect the hashrate at first, it might add to the card lifespan.

Finally, if you want to test your rig and check how it will be affected by the DAG epoch changes, you might want to do this:

Go to the Claymore ETH miner and add this option: –benchmark 130

Then, change the number to 140, 150 or 160 and see how this affects the hashrate.

So.. Claymore just released few days a go his latest Dual Ethereum Miner version 9.0, what’s nice about this release is that Decred’s hashrate was increased with 70%

What’s new!

I had made a few tests with Sapphire Nitro+ RX480 8GB OC and i was able to get around 29.2xx – 29.8xx Mh/s on Ethereum and 880.xx Mh/s on Decred.

Do note that with the -asm enabled you will also have a higher power usage, maybe 10% to 15%! If your GPU throttles try different -dcri.

Also you can use -gmap to set GPU order in fan/temperature list. This option is similar to “-di” option, but it manages fan/temperature list. For example, if you have two cards, you can change their order by adding “-gmap 10”. Another example, reverse order for six cards: “-gmap 543210”. This option is also useful if you want to exclude some GPUs from the list. For example, if you have four cards, you can exclude first GPU from fan/temperature list with “-gmap 123”.

Have you bricked your RX 470 or RX 480 because of bad BIOS or the flashing went wrong? In this tutorial, I am going to show you how to fix the bricked GPU by restoring the original BIOS and then to flash again a modded version.

A few days ago, I was helping a friend to flash a modified BIOS on two Sapphire Nitro+ RX 480 8GB OC for a better mining hashrate on Ethereum, and not only. The thing is that flashing the BIOS on the first card went perfect, but for the second card, we spent like 3-4 extra hours to figure what is wrong with it. We followed the same steps like we did with the first GPU (same steps I am showing in my tutorial).

What really happen? Well.. the flashing went well with no errors, but after the restart, we got a strange blue or black screen.. after few more restarts had the same results and at that point, i knew that there was something wrong with BIOS.

For the first GPU, I used 1500 timings (copied to 1625, 1750 and 2000), which went great, hitting around 30 Mh/s on Ethereum.

As for the second GPU I used the same timings on the first try but went bad, then I tested with 1625 timings copied to 1750 and 2000, getting 27-28 Mh/s on Ethereum (unstable).

How I recovered the broken BIOS? What I did to re-flash again the BIOS for few times until I found the best combination?

If this happens to you, no worries, you will get the GPU back up and running in a matter of minutes.

• Wait for full PC boot
• Switch the BIOS jumper to the “silent” position, to the HDMI/Display Port cables side (yes is safe to switch the BIOS while the system is running, it is meant to work like that)
• Start ATIflash as Administrator
• Flash the original BIOS ROM that you backup-ed before to modify it
• Reboot, that’s it

Once you complete this steps, your GPU should be running with no problems.. feel free to flash a different modded BIOS version with different timings, like I did.

In the end the card was faulty, maybe from the manufacturer and was replaced.

PandaMiner is a new company that started manufacturing mining gear in 2016. They aren’t as popular as Bitmain, but their outlook is promising.

PandaMiner decided to get into the market with their first all-in-one miner, the PandaMiner B1 Plus “scrypt asic miner” , multi-algorithm mining. Some people loved it while others hated it (although most of them haven’t tried the miner yet).

There have been a lot of talk about the PandaMiner B1; in this article, we will try to find out what’s really going on.

Overview

The PandaMiner B1 is a pre-assembled GPU mining rig. It consists of eight RX-480 4GB cards assembled together, overclocked and optimized along with an embedded and pre-configured PC with Windows (Chinese). This makes the B1 the perfect rig for those who don’t want to spend hours in Google in order to learn how to assemble, configure and overclock a rig correctly.

However, this does not mean that the PandaMiner B1 Plus is a mining rig for beginners only. According to reviews of people who tried it (and keeping the specs in mind), the rig is actually well-made and it performs as well as you would expect from 8 RX-480s. On the other hand, the price is reasonable too. We will get into detail in a minute.

The usage is extremely simple since the miner includes everything. All you have to do is to plug it into your monitor, run the basic configuration and you’re set to go. This is probably the main selling point of the product.

This is a tricky topic because as we said earlier, there is a lot of trash talk about the PandaMiner B1 on the web. It takes a minute to find several forum posts and reviews where people literally spit venom on the miner.

Now, after a bit of research it becomes apparent that the miner was criticized even before it hit the shelves. In most of the cases, people would give their opinions about the company and the product without even trying it first.

The main arguments against the PandaMiner B1 were that:

Now, those were the most rational arguments that actually make sense. Problem is – the forums are also filled with people yelling “scam”. That makes no sense, because people would label PandaMiner as “Chinese scammers” way before the miner was even released. Of course, there is a share of real life stories about Chinese companies scamming their customers, but does it mean that every Chinese company is a scam?

Now, if we get back to those three reasonable arguments, we suppose that (A) and (C) make sense – PandaMiner is new to the market and they had no way to prove themselves yet. Now, the whole altcoin mining world is new to, so it would be naïve to expect them to be a company with 10 years of expertise on the field.

The point (B) is rather subjective. We have listed the manufacturing costs, and it’s up to you to decide whether you want to save that money and build the rig on your own.

New ethOS update, increase your 480s rig with 180+ H/s per GPU! Around 780 H/s – 800 H/s per 6x rig.

1. Update ethOS by typing this command in terminal: sudo repair-ethos-update && sudo ethos-update && sleep 5 && r
2. Access “nano local.conf“
3. Replace “globalminer zcash-miner” with “globalminer optiminer-zcash“
4. reboot
5. That’s it!

UPDATE: January 8, 2017

Update now to the latest ethOS version 1.1.8, this will increase hashing power from 800 H/s to 1300+ H/s.

Also there was a major change, they have added claymore as global miner, after the update you can replace “globalminer optiminer-zcash” with “globalminer claymore-zcash”

1. Update ethOS by typing this command in terminal: sudo repair-ethos-update && sudo ethos-update && sleep 5 && r
2. Access “nano local.conf“
3. Replace “globalminer optiminer-zcash” with “globalminer claymore-zcash“
4. reboot
5. That’s it!

UPDATE: January 25, 2017

New with ethOS 1.1.9:

1. Updated claymore-zcash to 11.1, resulting in faster zcash hashrates
2. Updated optiminer-zcash to 1.4.0, resulting in faster zcash hashrates
3. Updated sgminer to 5.5.5, resulting in better stability for XMR mining

To update to the latest version type in terminal the following command: “sudo repair-ethos-update && sudo ethos-update && sleep 5 && r”

Ill recommend to use Claymore miner, i had the best results with it from all of my tests.

Current hashrate: 1,550-+ H/s

You will get somewhere around 255 – 275 , depends what manufacturer you have!

So.. i am back with a new Ethereum Minig Rig tutorial, this time i will be creating with the new GPU Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon  RX 480 8gb OC. YAY! and also with a bit different frame.. finally. Let’s get started

Preparing the motherboard

Unbox the motherboard carefully and keep the red material under it. The remove the black plastic protection from CPU slot.

Installing the CPU, Cooler & RAM

Once unboxed, get the cooler and remove thermal paste from it. Install the CPU and then apply thermal paste to it, final step is to install the cooler.

Frame, PSU and Motherboard

Now that we are all set with the motherboard and the frame let’s unbox the PSU. Then place the Motherboard in the center of the frame and the PSU in the left back corner.

Prepare the following cables:

1. 24 PIN ATX
2. CPU
3. 4x PCI-e
4. 2-3 Molex
5. 1 Sata
6. Power switch
7. Ethernet cable
8. And also do not forget about the keyboard

Once you have all the cables, begin to install them in PSU and motherboard.

GPU Installation

I highly recommend  to install the GPUs one by one and test them, follow the next steps to make sure that everything will work fine.

1. DO NOT install the SSD/ethOS yet
2. Plug in the PSU, make sure you also plug in the watt usage monitor (if you have one)
3. Install 1 GPU ONLY , turn on the PSU, power up the rig and make sure that it is booting correctly.
4. Now install the SSD and turn on the rig (video tutorial: how to write ethOS image on SSD), wait for full boot and an error with WRONG DRIVER text will be displayed in terminal will be displayed (like in this image). You will have to access the local.conf file, type in terminal “nano local.conf” and below “globalfan 85” add “globaldriver amdgpu”, save the file by pressing CTR+O and them hit ENTER,exit with CTRL + X and reboot. Now the mining should start with no problem for your 1 GPU (23.xx mh/s)
5. Success boot and mining for the 1st gpu? Great! Now install the second GPU and follow the same steps till you have all 6 GPU installed and working (in this way is very easy to find if a USB riser or Molex is not functioning correctly or the video card has a problem)

Rig is not booting with one GPU ?

1. Double check cables (from psu and motherboard)
2. Make sure CPU cooler is good placed and is not moving
3. Make sure that the RAM fits good in the slot, if still doesn’t boot change the slot
4. Check the jumpers for power switch if this is placed correctly

ethOS is not booting ?

1. Black screen? Shutdown and start it again
2. Is booting but the mining process is not starting? Shutdown and start it again
3. All GPU installed but one keeps crashing or one GPU is always crashing, ethOS version is 1.1.1? No worries, new version will be released (1.1.2) and that will fix this problems, also more features for RX 4xx series will be available)
4. Mining process not starting at all ? type “helpme” in terminal, copy the generated link and send it to mirc chat #ethereumOS

Everything is running perfect!? Great! Let’s configure ethOS

I had no problems, everything went nice a smooth from the beginning to the end, no riser/molex/sata/etc problem. Only that a card keeps crashing but like i said this will be fixed with the new ethOS release 1.1.2. I am too lazy to make this rig on windows, ethOS is much better, simple setup, easy configuration etc no headache on finding the right clocks and mems.. The screenshot of Watt usage meter is for 5 GPUs only, i forgot to take a photo with all 6 :/ but is somewhere around 900w.

OK, so we are all good, first of all we will need to configure ethos. Follow this steps

• Update ethOS to the latest version
  This can be done by typing the command sudo ethos-update && sleep 5 && sudo reboot in the black window. Now hit the enter button and do not interrupt the process of update.
• Set ethOS to the single rig mode
  Run this command to make the remote file completely blank echo -n "" > /home/ethos/remote.conf
• Changing ethOS password
  a) In terminal type passwd and you will see “Changing password for ethos.”
  b) Type default/current password which is “live”
  c) Then type your preferred password twice and that’s it, we secured the rig.

• Run the command nano local.conf and the default settings will be listed like in the image below.
• maxgputemp 85 leave it default for now. This number means that this is the maximum temperature your GPU should reach when the system automatically stops the miner.
• stratumproxy enabled this is a default command and should not modify it.
• Using arrows go down to proxywallet and change the address with yours.
• On proxypool you will see it in 2 lines, proxypool1 and proxypool2, it is because the second link is as a backup and if proxypool1 has connection problems or is down for any other reason then ethOS will connect to proxywallet2. If you are located in EU change proxywallet1 to this one: eu1.ethermine.org:4444
• Save new modifications by pressing CTRL+O then ENTER. CTRL+X to exit local.conf file.

Here is my configuration file

update: –cl-global-work 8192 should be changed to –cl-global-work 16384

Here it is, up an running. Currently i am waiting for the new ethOS version 1.1.2 (now using 1.1.1). The problem now is that i can only run with sotck settings, so no overclock till the 1.1.2 version with more support for rx 4xx series.

• Hash power (stock settings): 140 mh/s
• Power consumption (no overclock): 915w
• Max GPU temp (near to open window, 40%-50% global fan): 55-60 °C

UPDATE: October 18 2016

The new ethOS 1.1.2 version is out since 8 october, i am still doing tests and ill show what i got till now but first of all let’s see what is new in ethOS

• Added better stability, overclocking, and driver support for RX 400 series with new linux kernel. (the most important)
• Dramatically reduced size of ethOS by removing unused packages and caches.
• Reduced ethOS updater size.

I am having serious problems, one card keeps crashing, not sure why but i am still testing and checking to find the best core mem for this, so if one or two cards keep failing try to change usb risers recheck all the cables, maybe v 1.1.2 is not that stable yet but we can do a lot more things than previous version so maybe we can find the best core mem for our cards (for now).

First of all try to add “globalmem 2150” in local. conf (type “nano local.conf” in terminal). Core settings should remain default (do not add them). Leave it to run like for about 1-2 hours and if everything goes good increase the mem to “2225” and leave it like this for a while (significant mh/s will be visible).
