Few days ago I have tested and reviewed in-depth the RTX 2080 card. The results ended up being pretty promising thanks to the its excelent MHs/W ratio. Today, I would like to share with you my findings regarding the RTX 2080Ti – will it be as good as the 2080?

I would like to give a big shout out to the guys from Gigabyte for sending me an RTX 2080 Ti for testing purposes. Apparently, card manufacturers like the idea of miners buying their cards, which is indeed good for the mining community. This might also mean that Nvidia will probably release mining-oriented drivers and cards in the near future.

Compared to the 2080, the 2080Ti has got 40% wider memory bus, 3GB more VRAM, 47% more CUDA cores and slightly lower core clocks. On paper, the 2080 Ti is about 50% more powerful than the 2080, which makes sense considering the price is 50% higher too. Raw numbers do not always affect the mining performance as expected, so we will compare benchmarks in a bit.

The 2080 Ti has got 30% higher power consumption than the 2080, though it also features higher power limit. My RTX 2080Ti allows me to drag the power limit down to 60% before it starts losing hashrate. The 2080 can work without any hashrate loses even when power limit is at 47%.

RTX 2080 Ti Mining Hashrate

As expected, on factory clocks the 2080Ti features 42% higher Ethereum hashrate than the 2080 (on factory clocks too). The same difference applies to other algos. After some undervolting and overclocking, the 2080Ti generates 36% higher Ethereum hashrate than the 2080.

Dual mining offers the same results: With tweaked clocks and voltages, the 2080Ti features 37% higher hashrate on both coins than the 2080 with the relative increase in power consumption. Here are all the other benchmarks:

In Conclusion

While the 2080 Ti is a decent miner, the 2080 offers slightly more value for the money. The 2080Ti has got more cores and memory, though as for today, it does not seem to be able use all of its potential for mining. Maybe Nvidia will release some optimized drivers in the near future that will allow the 2080Ti to mine better. I am not discarding this option because again, apparently card manufacturers seem to like the idea of the mining community buying their cards.

No, this is not clickbait. Yes, I am aware that there seems to be a consensus that the new RTX 2080 cards are not great for mining – many users have made their mining benchmarks public and the results were pretty underwhelming. There is a catch, though.

Some days ago, I have finally received my Gigabyte RTX 2080 Windforce OC and I have done my own tests. My results were way better, which is why I am writing this article. Maybe I was lucky enough to find the sweet spot for undervolting and OC – most of the existing reviews are based on stock voltage and clock settings, and hence do not show the full mining potential of the card.

Whatever is the case, I am impressed by the mining performance of the new RTX 2080. In this article, you will see my benchmarks, as well as the settings I am using.

The RTX 2080 is the latest addition by Nvidia and it features better performance than the 1080Ti, as well as hardware support for Ray Tracing. This allows the RTX2080 to perform great both at gaming and mining.

The Gigabyte version of the card comes with the core overclocked from factory, three fans and a decent heatsink. Compared to an average 1080Ti, the Gigabyte RTX 2080 Windforce costs ~90 dollars more.

On paper, the RTX 2080 not only loses to the GTX 1080Ti in four of the six listed categories, it also loses to the GTX 1080 when it comes to price/features ratio. The only innovations seem to be the new GDDR6 memory and higher boost clocks. Eventually though, this does not prevent the RTX 2080 from being a decent miner. Let me show you the benchmarks:

Gigabyte RTX 2080 Windforce OC Mining Benchmarks

The first thing that most reviewers stated is that the RTX 2080 is very power hungry. While this is true for a card with stock settings, I was able to undervolt my RTX 2080 without losing too much hashrate, to a point it now consumes 70% less power than a GTX 1080Ti.

In fact, this makes the RTX 2080 more power efficient than the GTX 1080/ GTX 1080Ti. The RTX 2080 contrasts the most with the GTX 1080Ti by featuring up to 57% more MH/s per Watt.

In Conclusion

Yeah, crypto mining is going through some pretty dark days and not all of you feel like investing in new mining rigs for now. Those of you who do plan on expanding your farms might find a new friend in RTX 2080 cards. The low power consumption makes up for the extra price in the long run, unless you have free electricity.

Here’s another thing to keep in mind. The gaming community seems a bit unimpressed with the new RTX 20xx. Many gamers bought the RTX 2080/2080Ti in hopes to enjoy the new Ray Tracing technology but guess what: as for today, there is no game that would support Ray Tracing. This is one of the reasons why there seems to be little demand for RTX 20xx cards for now.

If you want to add some of those to your rig, this might be the right time to stock up on them, before gaming companies start to implement the new technology in their games.

I would also keep in mind that the driver and miner support for the card is still not optimal. As always, I expect improvements and tweaks in the near future.

Here’s the thing. I’ve been browsing amazon lately and I’ve realized that the Gigabyte GTX 1080 Ti is still about 30% cheaper than the MSI GTX 1080 Ti I’ve reviewed some days ago. This drew my attention because price is often tailored by the demand. I still see people buying MSI cards for their rigs, which is why I’ve decided to test both cards and see the difference with my own eyes. For this test, I’ve assembled a rig of three Gigabyte GTX 1080 Ti GPUs. Let’s take a look at the results.

After a quick glance at the specs, we can notice that the Gigabyte has got slightly lower core OC clocks than the MSI one. We are talking about 1-2% difference. How will this affect hashrate? We will see in a minute.

The Gigabyte GTX 1080 Ti uses three fans, while the MSI version only has two. The only downside to that is that the Gigabyte one does not use dual ball bearings. This renders the fans somehow noisier, especially after some months of mining.

In Conclusion

Overall, I believe the Gigabyte GTX 1080 Ti is not worse than its MSI counterpart. The price difference is caused by several reasons including marketing but not performance. As a miner, the Gigabyte GTX 1080Ti is still a solid option thanks to its great mining results and resale value. Plus, if you’ve got one of those sitting in your gaming rigs, you can easily use it to make some additional money in the spare time.

As you probably know, Ethereum network hashrate is about to fall into the hands of ASIC owners. The Antminer E3 should hash as good as 6 GTX 1070 cards at the price of only $ 800 USD ($2000 now) and with a power consumption of 800 W.

This means that we probably should look for other coins to mine. Lately, I’ve been testing Ravencoin that is probably one of the most promising ASIC-immune coins to the date. Ravencoin is based on a signature algorithm – the X16r and its purpose is to allow people to create and trade digital assets. It is a community-driven project that is getting a lot of love lately; you can read more about it here.

There is quite a lot of Ravencoin mining software to choose from, at the point it can get a bit confusing on which one to use.

Most of them have nice descriptions but those don’t really highlight the real differences and features (ESPECIALLY when it comes to hashrate with a specific GPU). I thought that the best way of figuring out which miner to use was by testing them all on my rigs and let the numbers speak.

Test Guidelines

The sole goal of my tests was to see how those miners perform when in the exact same conditions and using the exact same gear with the same clocks and voltage settings. Each of the miners has been working for an hour non stop.

I was also using a different wallet for every miner to make it easier to track the earnings.

Here is the hardware I’ve been using:

Top 5 Miners for Ravencoin

After the tests, I’ve picked five contestants that are interesting enough to be mentioned here. Let me briefly introduce them to you:

Nevermore v0.2.3

Nevermore is a ccMiner fork that is optimized for X16r mining. It was made by brianmct and alexis78 based on tpruvot’s work. According to certain reviews, this miner is more stable when mining X16r than the original ccMiner 2.2.5.

Suprminer v2

Created in March 2018 and updated in April, suprminer is yet another ccMiner fork. It works on all modern operative systems, though devs warned that Windows x64 releases might not be as good hashers as x86 ones. If you’ve been using previous versions of this miner, you might want to give the 1.5 one a try since it has got a lot of performance improvements.

As its name suggests, this miner is designed to work exclusively with Ravencoin. I’m expecting this one to hash quite well since the user feedback is quite great for this one. The miner has also some useful elements in their interface. For example, the program calculates an estimate on how many RVN would you mine in a day if your rig keeps the same hashrate. Devs reflect the somewhat friendly nature of the coin and they allow you to painlessly set the dev fee to 0% right from the miner interface – no need to recompile the whole application every time.

From my tests looks like Nevermore z-enemy-1.08 is the one to go, like i said i have used the same intensity (-i 21) with all miners, same clocks (core clock +100, mem clock -502) and same TDP (65%). Let me know what are you results by commenting below!

What Makes Ravencoin ASIC-Resistant?

Ravencoin is basically an enhanced version of Dash. It uses a modified version of the X15 algo that allows it to be ASIC-resistant.

Back in the day, it was thought that Dash was immune to ASIC mining too. The X11 algo is in fact an intricate chain of hashing algorithms (such as cubehash, shabal, echo, blake, sha512, etc), making it impossible for a traditional ASIC to mine X11. That being said, some dudes in China have managed to create a multi-algo system that was tailored to mine X11, thus creating the first Dash ASIC.

Ravencoin developers have studied the case of Dash and have managed to find the weak spot of the X11 algo, which is in the fixed order of the hashing algorithms. This led them to develop the X16R that features a randomized chain of hashing algos. Because of that, the X16R is now easier to mine with a GPU/CPU than with an ASIC:

The team tries to be as transparent as possible, which is why they’ve decided to avoid launching an ICO. The coin can be mined either solo or in pools, though solo mining is no longer recommended. In brief, anyone can start mining the coin anytime they want. Let me show you how to get started:

How to create a Ravencoin (RVN) wallet

• Exchange wallet, good to have if for trading/selling etc.., create an account here: Binance
• Download latest wallet for windows, mac or linux  https://github.com/RavenProject/Ravencoin/releases/
• Extract archive contents and run “raven-qt.exe” and wait for full sync
• Once synced go to “File” -> “Receiving Addresses“, if there is no address then click “New” and create one
